Today. Live Jazz at lunch time, but a pretty low-key scene on a cloudy and much cooler day than yesterday --

Taken this morning - the red is a nice contrast to the overall surfacing:

Is the red surface not an intermediary material, with another layer to later be added on top (with potentially a different colour)? I noticed that both the kids play area as well as the currently pinkish-red spots started out with the same black pavement-like material, but at the moment, it looks like the kids area is remaining black? Time will tell what the final surface materials will ultimately be for the park, I suppose.

Red area looks to be cement,... with red powder dye. Adds safe contrast for the skating trail area.

The black stuff in kids area is likely a permeable rubber base for water drainage likely waiting to be topped off with mulch.

or maybe they could just pipe the heat from the underground structure to help de-ice in winter? Crazy expensive?

Anyway my point was that there are many perspectives to consider. It’s fine for me to admire the small little pavers on the streets of Prague on vacation but hypocritical for me to demand someone do the same here considering I’m seriously considering ripping out pavers myself and replacing them with poured concrete for ease of maintenance.

Prague is an odd contrast to make, since its winters are almost as cold as Toronto's and it gets quite a bit of snow. Other northern cities like Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Beijing, and Montreal all make more extensive use of unit pavers, bricks and cobblestones than Toronto does. The climate isn't the problem. It's simply a matter of priorities.

I've heard that heated sidewalks actually pay for themselves because they save a lot of money from not having to manually clear the snow. As you'd expect, Scandinavia and Japan are well ahead of us on this.
