Forgive my ignorance of the construction process, but how do they remove those large buttresses used to hold up the side of the pit once they've built completely around them? They're on too great of a slant to simply lift them out vertically, no?
 
Nope, that's exactly what they do. You've probably worked out that they help keep the walls of the pit from collapsing before the parking structure is able to absorb those horizontal loads. Once the structure has reached a point at which the engineers are comfortable that it is able to hold the walls apart by itself (usually when it's one level below where the buttress sits), they simply hoist them out with the crane.
