I don't think hiding them is the best solution. I believe the holes are for venting too. These covers provide a great canvas for something creative. There's no reason for them to be utilitarian or hidden away. There are some amazing manhole covers in other cities.

Other cities? You can find them here. You don't even have to go too far. This one is literally across the street on the NE corner of the hummingbird centre.

I really like how this park is shaping up and the classic fountain fits the St Lawrence neighbourhood perfectly. That cat looks a bit demonic though. I wonder how long it takes before it ends up in someone's dorm room.

Yeah, I have fears over potential of vandalism since it's going to be really popular. Maybe we do need a demonic killer cat for those.

Since we love signage here in Toronto...

Bear in mind I was thinking about the fierce competition in Japan that has created some truly amazing artwork.

As far as manhole covers go, those are gorgeous. We can't get rid of telephone poles, so something that nice is a long ways off. If they could just make some dog/cat themed ones for this park - and maybe for use in/near other dog parks, that would be incredible.

Today.

These Japanese manhole covers are the result of an ongoing competition between the cities. Maybe that what we need to do here. A yearly Canadian competition for every type of urban improvement. Certainly Torontonians would wake up to a subpar place on the medals table.

That would be a great idea.

Nice to see the sidewalk opened up further...

I'm not sure if this has been posted someone here yet so I apologize in advance if it's old news but there are some great photos of the progress on the architects website here: http://www.claudecormier.com/en/projet/berczy-park-2/ Including pics of the dog sculptures for the fountain which I am particularly excited about. Come summer I wouldn't be surprised if this fountain becomes a bigger tourist photo op than the Flat Iron building 20 feet away.

Thanks for the link! Yeah, this is destined for entries in the Michelin Guide, three-second snippets on Ontario Tourism commercials, top ten must-do lists, and critics decrying it as tacky, because you can never please everyone.
