Curious, what evidence is there that buskerfest did better on Yonge, is there more space, it seems like less, woofstock I can see, there is more space there.
 
On the agenda at Council today/tomorrow - to increase the construction budget to nearly $8million ($4.5 million increase)

City Council amend the approved 2014 Parks, Forestry and Recreation Capital Budget for the capital project known as Berczy Park Construction (CPR117-44-22), in the amount of $4.507 million to a total value of $8.007 million, and to be cash flowed as follows: $1.000 million in 2014 and $3.507 million in 2015, with a net zero impact financed from Section 42, Section 37 and Section 45 funds.

With the approval of this report, staff will have the funding required to complete construction of Berczy Park and adjacent Scott Street streetscape improvements in 2015 prior to the start of the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. The additional $4.507 million is requested, to be cash flowed in 2014 and 2015. The additional funding is requested from Ward 28 Section 42 above 5%, Section 37, and Section 45 opportunities.

Nice design, but I would replace the park with what used to be there in a minute (I know, I know, be here now.....):

 
To few people's surprise the Berczy Project has now been postponed until immediately after the Pan-Am Games. The original plans had the park make-over start in late August 2014 and include work on Scott Street between Wellington & Front but it was discovered that Bell has plans to do work on Scott that would have prevented that occurring. The City now will award the tender for both the Park and the work on Scott in late 2014 or early 2015 and start other preparations such as awarding the public art contract etc etc. Probably best not to try to rush things and to start promptly in mid-August 2015.

Though I agree that it is FAR too early for a Christmas Tree this tree is described by the BIA (who are responsible) as a "Winter Tree" and it normally stays up from mid-October through March. The more colourful "Christmas Lighting" around the trees goes up nearer to Christmas and is removed sooner.
 
It's still way too soon. Nothing should go up until after Remembrance Day. Crass commercialism, plain and simple.

I don't recall Remembrance Day being used as a traditional demarcation point for Christmas anything - it is simply too early - Nov 11 has nothing to do with it.

Technically it doesn't but it does feel respectful to our veterans and it does make some sense: in the U.S.A. Thanksgiving in late November is customarily accepted as the start of the holiday season (holiday lights turned on and Macy's Parade etc ). Toronto had its analogue in the Santa Claus Parade which always followed Remembrance Day and kicked off the debut of store window displays and Santa in the mall etc...

Though not enforceable in any way, obviously, I do have the right to judge the BIA for its commercial-based choices (and judge mall owners for playing 'Rudolph' in October). Ultimately the public will decide what's acceptable though. I may very well be out to lunch.

To add: To be clear I agree that Remembrance Day is too early. I am only suggesting that holiday anything shouldn't be seen until after November 11th at the very minimum.

And it was all gone this morning. The real tree will be up in a month or so. They usually try to get it up before the Santa Claus Parade.
