Why would unit 827 be on what appears to be the 5th floor?

because the residential units start at Floor #6 .. so essentially the two first floors (the retail ones) are equivalent to 5 floors.. this is because each retail floor is 20+ foot.. so 40 feet combined for two retail floors.. 40 feet divided by 8 foot (standard residential height) is equal to 5 floors..

So the elevators are going to have a button for G then 2 or 3 then 6? I thought floors were counted by the actual floor and not the stories that floor takes up.

Nobody in the Toronto development industry thinks in 8 foot increments. That may have been a standard height 30 years ago, but not now. Making the first floor above the retail levels #6 is pure goofiness.

I'm just explaining the logic that was probably used to justify starting at 6th floor.. I don't have any information on elevator buttons, that would probably be revealed on occupancy but im almost sure that they will match the unit numbers.. so to access 827, you press 8.. it makes sense.. if you think that skipping floor numbers in an elevator is weird, you should see how hotels manage that too.. a lot of them would start at much higher floor to account for all the super high utility floors below it (lobby, ballroom, gym, pool, etc)..

8 foot increments is what 40/5 is.. that's how i came up with it.. the building itself has 8 foot ceilings for some of the units so I don't see why they didn't use that logic .. they probably should have used 9'.. and by the way, they just said that the retail floors are 20+ foot.. so maybe its not 40/5, but 45/5=9 foot ceilings..

The logic of floor number matching the unit numbers makes sense as that's how it is in majority building. Every condo I've been in with different sized floors still counts the floors and not the stories. If the second level is 25 feet above the first it is still counted as the second floor.

The fact that the "8th floor" is actually the 5th walkable level is the weird part as that is very uncommon in new condos anywhere.

To further the claim they released a notice on February 28th saying that level 4 was currently in progress.

Everyone understands how suite and floor numbering works… and even how they relate to elevator buttons. Even some of us site administrators get it. What I'm telling you is that basing the floor number on 8 foot increments would be pandering to way-out-of-date notions and is therefore patently ridiculous. I know that the fire department is not a fan of messing with floor numbering.

again, im not telling you how elevator buttons work, i was responding to an earlier question about elevators and how they would be mapped.. so this has nothing to do with being an administrator..

also, re-iterating my point that 8 foot increments was my assumption based on a calculation.. it could be 9' because those retail floors are supposedly 20+..

The purpose behind all of this is obviously more about marketing than anything else.. to give you the sense that your 3rd floor condo is actually a 6th floor equivalent.. it's a three floor bump.. if you think about it from a vertical height perspective, you're not getting robbed, you're being given an exact proximation of how elevated you'll be.. from a re-selling perspective, your apartment unit number will be equivalent to other residential building that don't have gigantic retail floors.. from a firefighter perspective, reaching unit 829 would require the same flight of stairs as an 8th floor unit in a regular residential building (with standard 8-10' floor heights).. and the floors could certainly be labeled inside the staircase even the floor is not walkable..

Ya you're right.. I actually visit that page pretty frequently and I did notice that they used this terminology. I think from a construction project management point of view, level 3 is actually the 6th floor..

The reason I'm saying all of this is not because I enjoy their numbering convention, it's because i've been anxiously waiting for this building to get built.. Residential floors (according to sales, marketing, etc) only start at 6th floor.. Also, I have looked at the balcony configurations to map out where some of the units are, and it seems to be accurate..
