Construction to begin on Aqualuna

The building is one of two which will soon be under construction at Bayside, which is now entering Hines’ final construction phase.

Aqualuna will be a 468,000-square-foot, 240-suite condominium comprised of two 16-storey towers to be built in partnership with Tridel. After going through a minor variance committee hearing in mid-July, Hines expects to begin construction in August.

Aqualuna will feature a sixth-floor amenity terrace and pool with views of Lake Ontario as well as direct access to an indoor lounge. The ground floor will have approximately 18,000 square feet of retail space.

Seventy-eight per cent of the units are sold and occupancy is scheduled for October 2024.

“The only other phase left is an affordable rental building that’s controlled by the city,” said Tesciuba, who is responsible for all real estate activities in Canada for Hines, which is headquartered in Houston.

There are no firm timelines in place to start construction on the apartment building. While Hines would like to be part of that project, the City of Toronto is leading and funding the project and will make the decisions on how it progresses.

Is this a general comment or one pertaining to this project thread? The Aqualuna pool looks a lot larger than 3' wide.
 
I'm excited. If this one approximates the delicious render porn, there may even be brief respite from the no-hope, waterfront-loathing (usually referring to a relatively small waterfront slice of course).

Praying that Hines actually sails this ship, and Tridel runs the sales office.
 
It promises to be the best quality building on Queens Quay. This stretch needs it after a few with the duds to the west. Monde, Arbour, and this one might just save this stretch.

^ Agreed. But it is just that... a piece. In the big picture discourse, it does become wearisome to listen to doomsayers chanting about our dump of a waterfront. This is obviously a highly visible downtown strip that receives extra (often negative) scrutiny given its proximity to the core (adding to some brutal errors committed in decades past) and of course it's a new slice.

If folks can cherry-pick everything wrong with our disastrous(?) waterfront, rest-assured I feel quite empowered to pick some of the delicious fruit that is already hanging:
1. When I think of our waterfront, I think of the Toronto Island(s) a green urban jewel unmatched on the continent (dream on Chicago), and further afield, Sunnyside, Humber Bay Parks, Bluffers' Park, the "accidental" paradise of Leslie Street spit etc., and the not to be forgotten smaller contributions like Erickson's stepped condo next to YoYoMa Music Garden, Harbourfront, delightful wave decks etc.

2. The future: obviously the Portlands is one of the most ambitious urban renewal projects in NA history, offering early, hopeful clues with little things (like moving a river), habitat design and some great new bridge design elements. Inevitably there will built form (residential) clunkers here for sure, but the overall transformation will be a mega-win for the city. Buildings are only one waterfront discussion point. Wish we could fast forward the Portlands.

3. The most celebrated city on earth is NYC for many reasons. But one forgets that a massive swath of built form along the Manhattan waterfront is like a giant collar stain, sort of equivalent to a 100-fold version (old) Regent Park.

I don't need to see another 1000 photos of Stanley Park to fuel my loathing of our waterfront. I already love most of what exists and the future is exciting as hell. Shout out again to Aqualuna. 😍

I'm not an architecture expert of any sort, but I do live in the neighbourhood with a baby, and I can say that the stretch of waterfront between Jarvis and Sherbourne is one of the best places in the city to relax and hang out with a baby. You have two splash pads to cool down, a nice patch of grass with some shade at Sherbourne Common, a giant sandbox at Sugar Beach, two playgrounds (when they open again), a nice shady promenade to walk along, plenty of benches to relax on, and a pub and a Starbucks (with more to come) for refreshment.

Now if only we could do something about the people who walk their dogs and don't pick up after them, which is a bigger blight on the area than any of the buildings!
 
^ nice post. I'd wager that many of the waterfront sh*t-slingers on this board are the ones who don't walk fido with a Poop and Scoop bag in their back pocket. :cool:

I carry 2 doggy bags on walks with my beloved female Tibetan Spaniel Winnie... ironically, we were profanely attacked by a citizen just yesterday after Winnie squatted for a pee (which the helpful citizen mistakenly assumed was a poop). I unfortunately replied with similar profanity... "she's a #$%^&*( girl.. she squats to piss" (waves doggy bag).

For the earlier buildings in the Aqua family they (or WT) built the water's edge promenade first. Will that be the plan here too? It WOULD be good to get it finished, though probably not open while the building is under construction.
