Toronto 216 Bathurst Street | ?m | 2s | XANA | Ava Janikowski

What a waste of time. I don’t understand why the city is ok with this massive opportunity cost, and (most probably) the increase in cost.

I guess the current system allows councillors to get more from developers?

Yesterday I spotted a backhoe doing some excavation behind the building, and today some workers putting up some signage to this long neglected property.that was once the rather mysterious and sketchy Oak Leaf Steam Baths.

Here’s an article about the Oak Leaf: https://nowtoronto.com/news/last-shvitz-at-the-oak-leaf/

The company renovating the building is Xana Group (a design/build & renovation company). Based on their website their work is pretty generic and forgettable (budget chain hotels, home renovations, etc):

Sorry for the poor photos, it was taken from a moving streetcar. If you zoom in, the teaser rendering on the signs looks interesting.

November 29 - A boutique hotel with thirty units, with a cafe / bar on the ground floor and a lounge in the basement. Building permits were issued in May and July 2021 and it is finally getting built. Renovating and repurposing of the existing structure as a hotel was confirmed by both the building permit and the crew on site.

The area behind the building is actually quite large, and is currently being cleared. From the building permit:
