I saw them installing the board that displays the showtimes behind the counter the other day (on the ground floor) and it was displaying "Welcome to Metropolis 24" across the top. That might not mean anything tho, since it doesn't take much to change those signs.

Agree the the square is sterile but I don't think AMC will go crazy on the prices. Theatre admissions have actually gone down in price in the past few years and I can't imagine AMC over-pricing their movies when there is a market for the same movies a few blocks away on Bloor or on Richmond.

This is interesting (and I have no idea): are they releasing all films now in digital format, along with film?

If the picture quality is significantly better, I think this theatre will attract crowds which would not otherwise attend (like me). And it may well force other theatres in the city to go digital.

I think TLS would fare far better as a podium than as a stand-alone building. It's a great site for a tall building - I wouldn't mind seeing 30's - 50's all around the square actually.
A rather tall tower on top could fit a big chunk of Ryerson into it as well - and with residences on top of that, lifted high above the noise of the street- well, it might have been interesting. I wouldn't want to see PenEquity build it though! (see below)

So walking past Toronto Life Square today I thought... well... it wouldn't be so bad.. if... it were a podium for a tall building!

and so ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the poorly photoshopped, "Tower at Dundas Square"!

(its "11 Times Square" plopped on top of Toronto Life Square)

Do you think it would even be physically possible to do this in future? without tearing Toronto Life Square Down? just build ontop?

I doubt they could build something like this without major changes to the current building. Is the foundation even strong enough for a tower?

They built 250 Yonge on top of the Eaton Centre.. From Yonge it looks like it's sitting partly on struts above the mall.

250 was built/roughed in to the top of the parking garage and then capped for future contruction... so it was not an after-thought.

Yeah, the 250 was in the original plans of the Eaton Centre when it was presented to City hall back in 1960. ( in the renders at the time it was a monster concrete slab). Of course it was not built and completed until 1991.

As for Metropolis (TLS) I don't think we will see anything built on top of it directly, but there is the corner at Gould and Yonge (S/E Corner) which has the makings of a fine place to put a condo tower. And lets not forget about 277 Victoria and the old Hakim store on Dundas.

Many older buildings, such as the CHUM/CITY building were build with structures capable of accomodationg another 5 or 6 floors, in case they needed to expand.

Yeah but this is TLS, it seems to have been built to the most bare minimum specifications it could.

Great idea Cal. The building on the S/E corner of Gould would provide for an excellent street level façade/lobby for a tall tower. Since Toronto Life Sq. is build around this block of buildings on Yonge, this tower would appear to be part of TLS and could even be connected to it

Despite the weather crews were out this morning putting up the last advertising sign close to Dundas & Victoria. The amc ticketing area is coming together however it looks like there is something happening to the adidas wall in the escalator atrium going down to the lower levels. They have cut out a big piece of drywall and scaffolding is set up to the top of the atrium, maybe they are going to something cool to improve the visibility of the store to the internal elements. Additionally the Extreme Fitness people were saying that they will be open on a temporary basis as early as next month...can't wait

I wonder how they're going to open up the Adidas store to the interior atrium if there is a fire exit hallway between the two.
