Target

The Zellers at East York Town Centre closed down a few weeks ago and is no longer a 'Zellers'. All signs of Zellers have since been removed, and the only remnance is the dirt stuck on the wall that wrapped around each of the letters in the Zellers sign. They have heavy equipment on site now demolishing the interior and are loading everything into dump bins. Looks like they are quite ahead of schedule. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the first one to open in 2013, or one of the first.

The one in the Stockyards is still in the speculation phase though.

It's going to be there

It looks like some other cities will be the guinea pigs for the new version of Target.

Target opened its first City Targets, in Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle, on Wednesday. At 80,000 to 100,000 square feet, City Target, at its smallest just over half the size of a remodeled Target, is aimed at urban shoppers. For instance, City Targets would not carry a six-piece patio set, but a three-piece balcony set instead.

“We see this as an opportunity for the people who live, work and play downtown, who probably have a suburban Target they call their home base,†said Molly Snyder, a company spokeswoman. “You’ll see less 12-packs of paper towels and more four-packs, knowing most people will arrive by foot or public transportation and will have to carry it home.â€

TORONTO -- The Hudson's Bay Co. says it will close most of its 64 remaining Zellers Inc. stores in Canada that aren't being converted to Target stores, affecting up to 6,400 jobs.
A spokeswoman for Hudson's Bay Co. said Thursday the Zellers parent company has been contemplating what to do with the brand since last year, when it sold the majority of the leases for the discount stores to Target Corp.
"After a lengthy review and numerous discussions with various parties it became apparent that continuing to operate the Zellers banner in its current form was not viable, particularly given the geographic footprint of the remaining locations," said spokeswoman Tiffany Bourre.
Most of the remaining stores will be closed by March 2013, the company said.
But Bourre said the company hasn't ruled out the possibility of maintaining some of the store locations and opening them under another retail banner.
Bourre said that Zellers is "considering options" for certain locations, including "rebranding some stores" -- a determination that has yet to be made.
It did not provide any indications as to which stores, or how many, would remain open.
The company said it operates 64 stores that were not acquired by Target, or were already slated for closure. An average Zellers has about 100 employees.
A spokeswoman for Walmart Canada wouldn't comment on whether Canada's largest retailer is interested in acquiring any of the locations. Target Corp. could not immediately be reached for comment.
Target plans to open 125 to 135 stores in Canada. It has purchased the leasehold interests of 189 sites currently operated by Zellers Inc. and it says about $10 million to $11 million will be invested to remodel each facility.

The City Target format would fit very well for Lawrence Square Shopping Centre, since the Zellers there is just beginning to have clearance sales and possibly liquidate in 2013.

The Seattle and Portland CityTargets are right downtown - not in inner suburbs.
Akin to Canadian Tire at Eaton Centre or Bed Bath & Beyond being at Aura.

That's correct. Think of World's Biggest Bookstore as a City Target.

Soo...the Ajax Target is one of those slated to open in the first round. The store closed around the third week of September. Significant construction activity is now taking place, including the structural work on new entrance areas (two, which will be familiar to those of you who have shopped Target in the States).

Retail Insider has posted on their Facebook page that Target has secured a 100,000 SF space in Toronto's downtown close to the waterfront. I can't think of anything that's existing or that's even being planned that could accomodate them (presumably on mutliple levels).

Pretty sure that's the Menkes development on York they're talking about. There was buzz in that thread about it awhile back.

That too is also an excellent location for City Target for Toronto.

I can't think of any better location for Target downtown, right by the subway and between Eaton Centre and Aura BBB/College Park.
The waterfront has transit issues and apparent is less ideal, unless one is expected to drive there.

Unfortunately the WBBS can't accomodate 100,000 SF, so I don't think they have landed at this site. The Menkes on York does appear to be more plausible though.
