Stellantis Battery Cell Factory (LG Energy Solution, 1s, ?) (Windsor)

LG Energy Solution and Stellantis are partnering to build a major battery plant in Windsor. The plant is currently under construction on a 220 acre industrial site located at 9865 Twin Oaks Drive, recently resumed after a high-profile fight between Stellantis and the provincial and federal governments over subsidies and tax breaks. This project also has the potential for another major spin-off investment, an LG Chem plant, which will produce chemicals for the battery manufacturing process. However, whether or not this is to be located in Windsor is not confirmed yet, as concerns have been raised by LG about limitations on the current hydro supply capacity in Windsor-Essex, which is nearing its limit. Multiple hydro transmission projects are being accelerated by the province to hopefully secure this additional plant for the region.

Update on Windsor Battery Plant

Tangentially related to this project (as it is increasing the electrical capacity so these facilities can be built in Windsor), I’ve been able to see some progress happening on Hydro One’s 230-kV Chatham to Lakeshore transmission line over the last couple of months when I’ve had to make trips down to Windsor. East of Tilbury, foundations appear to have been poured and towers have been delivered, but are not yet setup. West of Tilbury, foundations appear to be in the process of being poured. The project is planned to be completed sometime in 2024.
