St Lawrence Market

It has been a Loblaws for the past few years; as a Superstore it will have (probably) more general merchandise. It's a different banner and a different division within the Loblaw family and is not based strictly on size, although size does have a bearing. Superstores are generally over 100,000 sq ft; Maple Leaf Gardens is 75,000. Not a lot of difference for the customer really, when it comes down to it. Same product line.

There may also be union issues involved.

I'm going to a leafs game on thursday, and wanted to know if there are any good local spots for cheap beer and food. what are your favorite spots in St. lawrence?

I don't know anywhere that's super "cheap" that I would visit in the area, but here are a few reasonable suggestions:

- A great new spot that's been open for a few months is the AAA Bar (http://tripleabar.ca/) on the north side of Adelaide just before Jarvis. They do Texas-style food aka ribs, fried chicken & waffles, brisket, etc. and they have a decent selection of beers on tap and in bottles/cans. It's within walking distance of the ACC, if you get there fairly soon after they open at 5 you should be okay to make the game.

- C'est What on the southeast corner of Church and Front (http://www.cestwhat.ca/) is also a good standby, great all-Canadian beer selection and the food has been quite good lately.

- Right next to C'est What is the Jersey Giant which is a pretty standard pub. The food is better than you would expect, but the atmosphere can be a bit dank. Beats the nearby Firkin though, in my opinion, or most of the spots on the Esplanade row.

- A new burger chain called The Works (http://www.worksburger.com/) has recently opened on the northwest corner of Church and Front, I've never tried it, but it looks like it could be a good pre-game spot.

I'm with City Painter in that I'll steer clear of trying to find a "cheap" spot in the area. I just won't mention any "expensive" bars or restaurants.

The Works has amazing burgers - absolutely amazing (and the perfect meal the day after a hard night), but it feels more like a burger joint than a bar... which means its doing a great job being exactly what it's intended to be. I recommend it.

C'est What? has been around for years and is known for having a large microbrew selection and the food is really good. I particularly like the cozy downstairs brick wall feel of the place. One of my favourite spots in the area.

I'm not a big fan of the Jersey Giant but they are one of the few pubs that still carries Smithwicks (one of the best beers there is) so it gets a pass. :) I wouldn't say it beats the bars on The Esplanade, but if you're looking to keep the bill low then avoid Bier Markt (which is great) and stick to Scotland Yard where beer prices are reasonable and the food isn't expensive at all. Fionn MacCools is a good choice too.

The new Jack Astors on Front is a Jack Astors I like. I usually choose to avoid, but the setup is the best of any location I've seen, its perfect for watching sports (which you'll be in the mood for), and the food is pleasantly surprising. Expectations should be easily met.

Has anyone gone to Front Row? What's it like?

I actually ended up going to Bellissimo's on the Esplanade on the recommendation of a girl in the park. the pizza there is really good. AAA looked cool during a daytime walk-by, so I will need to check it out.

I posted a note about the proposed Heritage Conservation District for the St Lawrence area and the building survey that is part of it a few weeks ago; the first training session for the HCD Survey volunteers was held on Monday but it's not too late to volunteer. There will be another training session, probably an evening one, in the next few weeks. Details of the project are at: http://www.slna.ca/slna-HCD.html

To get more details or offer to help write to hcd@slna.ca

UPDATE: Next training session for building survey participants will be on Wednesday, May 8th 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. George Brown College, 200 King Street East Sign up at hcd@slna.ca
