Sobeys

The one on the Queensway just west of the Humber is quite busy.

Apparently they will be closing about 50 stores across the country, mostly in Western Canada since buying Safeway.

I emailed them, and just received this reply...

Sobeys wrote: "Following an extensive and careful review of our operations, we’ve made the decision to close our Yonge Street Sobeys Express store effective April 13th, 2013."

Very odd indeed....great corner real estate. Perhaps there's a future redevelopment play at this site with a demolition clause, thus scaring prospects away.
 
Yes, highly likely. Or the landlord is simply asking for too much, scaring away the nail salons, crappy sushi joints and gold-buyers that would normally fill any vacant space for the right price. The property tax rebate for vacant retail space enables landlords to sit on empty space and wait for the "right" offer.

I really hate that clause and don't understand it at all .. isn't it more likely the place will catch on fire when there isn't anyone in it to watch out ? Maybe we save a tiny but on garbage pickup but the truck is likely there either way so ..

Any plan to end this soon?
 
Wouldn't the former Front Street Sobey's make a better location for Closeout King than the Yonge Street Express store? I thought they went for larger spaces…

This is very interesting; the former Sobey on Front Street @ Princess was also leased (by Sobeys) to Closeout King. The signage went up last October or November and it STILL hasn't opened.
Seems odd they'd take over both the Sobey's on Front, and now according to Prettyflamingo, the one on Yonge.

I can't see them suddenly having 2 downtown locations.

It's also odd that the signage on the Front Street location went up so quickly, and then almost 6 months later ... nothing.
 
Sobeys begins installing plexiglass shields at cash registers

Sobeys parent company Empire Co. has started installing plexiglass shields at cash registers to protect its employees and customers from the coronavirus.

The grocery chain began installing the shields on Thursday night, chief executive Michael Medine said in a letter to customers released Friday.

“They will not be in every store immediately, but we’ll install them as quickly as we can,” Medine said.

The company is also reducing store hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in an effort to support extra sanitation protocols and allow more time to restock shelves.

Staff are required to wash their hands every 15 minutes and cashiers will receive additional resources to clean common areas more frequently. Stores will also have floor markers installed at checkout to encourage a two-metre distance between customers.

“We understand we are an essential service to all Canadians, and we want you to know that we are doing everything in our power to maintain our stores to the highest standard of cleanliness and safety,” Medine wrote.
