So whats everyone think about Mats Sundin?

So.. theres been a lot of talk about Mats Sundin.... is he going to play or retire? And if he plays, will he go to Vancouver, somewhere else, or will he stay in Toronto? And then some people don't want him to stay.. but I dunno, he's been around for a long time and as bad as the Leafs have been, he hasn't jumped ship plus.. he's still the best player they have. Sure, you gotta start somewhere to rebuild a team, but Sundin has been around for a while and getting rid of him doesn't seem like a great idea... although I'm sure theres plenty of arguements either way
 
I think the way Sundin has been sitting on the fence about playing again has turned a lot of people off. He's at the top of his game and he has no reason to retire. Hockey fans like players who want to play no matter what, especially because it's such an emotionally driven game where, as cliche as it sounds, heart is often as important as skill. I don't think a lot of Leafs fans will be sorry to see him go.

That's a given.

I think all of the 'lack of heart' stuff that Sundin has been facing his whole carreer with the Leafs is a load of BS. Joe Sakic's sitting on the fence as well. When you are closing in on 40, it's perfectly natural to step back and assess whether you want to go through the effort of an 82 game season - especially if your team is going to suck as bad as the Leafs will this year.

He can't win. If he leaves at the top of his game, he's got no heart. If he comes back and plays until his numbers drop drastically, then he's just in it for the money.

I'd love to see him back if he wants to play. Of course if he comes back to the Leafs that will hurt our chances at the #1 pick next year.

I agree... he's a point-a-game player over his career - something that puts him in a very special category. He can play center (strong on faceoffs) or wing, is a good two-way player in both ends of the ice, and is highly respected by all the league's players. This is pretty much a dream for any GM and fan.

As is the case in a lot of relationships, sometimes people get so used to things that they end up taking those qualities for granted - until the person in question is gone. I'd love Sundin to be a Red Wing, but Hossa acted quicker and sold Detroit GM Kenny Holland with a simple one year deal at a bargin-rate price.
 
Mats is the highest scoreing Swedish born player in NHL history. When he plays with a chip on his shoulder, he makes use of of his 6'5" frame. I wish he'd make up his mind, although, I doubt he'd be able to salvage the trainwreck that will be this season. Not a good time to be a Leafs fan.
