What is quite obvious to me, is that there are a lot of people who are rabid cop haters, and are using this incident to further there bias against the police.

Does it not occur to you that the unending series of incidents like this one (and G20, and the various corruption scandals, etc.) are the cause of "rabid cop hate" (which turns out, on closer inspection, to be "understandable contempt for corrupt public officials")? What I'm curious about is what have the police done for to cause people to be rabid barrel suckers? Not even the police respect barrel suckers, and it's not like the Toronto Police has covered itself in glory in the past quarter century.

Having no sympathy for Sammy or reiterating the fact that he is/was the criminal in this scenario does not ipso facto mean you defend the cops. I personally am quite ambivalent when it comes to cops.

Why are you more intent on holding a dead 18-year-old immigrant to account than a well-paid public servant with a gun? Problem is your supposed non-defense of the cops seems to include giving them a free ride on killing people if those people in any way take on the trappings of criminal culture.

I don't have much sympathy for the deceased here--if you read the tweets of his friends you'd understand they all seem to come from the wrong side of the law. One of his friends suggests something like "Everyone carries a knife these days" like wtf?

I've also wondered if his intention was to kill himself--the way he was holding the knife looks more like he was going to slit his throat than kill a cop.

That's the way I'm seeing it too, UD. After viewing the first video a few times, I am wondering what was on the cop's mind. I believe it would have been easy to keep the kid at a distance and unable to inflict harm. I'm not taking sides with the kid, either. I just feel that the loss of life was totally unjustified and preventable. Cool heads are what we want in situations like these.

Probably too difficult to just find something and block him off safely. That said, why didn't they pepper spray him? What's the worst he can do as a reaction?

Or why not just close the front door, drive a cop car up tight beside the rear door and let him cool off inside. Worst scenario he attempts to stab himself. It was night time and therefore the cops had tons of time to chat with the guy. Ask him about his family, if he's hungry etc.

Why are you so quick to judge a cop who was called to deal with this "18 year old immigrant" who was waving a knife and exposing himself at innocent people on public transit? Remember the cops didn't just pick Sammy out and decide to shoot him. They were called because Sammy posed a very real danger to the public. Does that mean Cst. Forcillo was justified in shooting Sammy 9 times? Probably not, however I'm waiting until I know all the facts before I decide if this Constable is out of line or not. Its not blind defence of the police, it the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise.

Depending on where he is closing the front door might mean having to approach closer to the individual - which might make him even more agitated and unpredictable. Given the number of cops at hand, their mere presence around the entrance would be sufficient I'd think.

Wonder what kind of locking mechanism is available on a streetcar - control keys? Presumably I would think that TTC operator would have pulled that before getting off.

Let's not kid ourselves. This guy should have never got into the TPS. Hiring 18 years to be peace officers is just dumb.
They don't have the life experience to deal with the stuff that cops see everyday.

Notice how the rest of the cops are very calm, weapons holstered and this 'hero' seemed to be ready to discharge his weapon? Seems like Sam Yatim was more calm than the cop. Sam Yatim was a trouble maker punk kid, but he did not deserve to die that night.

The first 3 shots might have been self defence/bad reaction. But the next 6 is definitely 2nd degree murder. The cop was either emotionally unstable, or a complete coward.

photos of guns (check), known gang hand signals including making a pistol with your hand (check), talking tough (check), photos of and talking about doing drugs and alcohol despite being underage (check) and still you think this kid is an angel?

[Defence lawyer Leora] Shemesh said officers showed up en masse at court, surrounded her and Costain in an elevator, followed her to her car after a hearing and even took cellphone pictures of her in the courthouse. When the camera incident was raised in court, it caused such an uproar it almost brought the case to a halt, she said.

The officer who took the picture was put on the witness stand and refused to show the judge his cellphone to prove he had not taken the picture. Shemesh said it so enraged the judge that he raised his voice with the officer before ordering him out of the courtroom, raising questions about whether the judge should recuse himself.
