Same-Sex Marriage Passes Second Reading

C-38 passed second reading 164-137, pretty much as expected. I can post a list of how MPs voted if you want. Of course, now it just has to get through committee consultations, third reading and the senate before it can receive royal assent. Obviously the parliament will have to survive into the fall for that to happen.

Also interesting today, there was a tie on a private member's bill to provide for consecutive sentences in criminal offences committed with a firearm. It was supported by a curious mix of the Conservatives, NDP and some Liberals. The bulk of the Liberals and the Bloc opposed the bill. The speaker broke the tie by voting in favour, which he is obliged to do in order to continue debate.

It was such a screwed up day in Parliament today - with all that race-baiting stuff, and KKK accusations. Some of these people!

This week was fun - the Conservative implosion and seeing the NDP-Liberal budget bill pass the way it did was great to see. Kudos to both parties for getting it through.

Now to finish up C-38.

Well, even the Liberal backbenchers against C-38 is more or less conceding defeat.

What a way to cap off Pride week.

And it's law! Too bad so sad for those opposed. I'm pleased, if only because I thought the "debate" was giving a forum to homophobia, and because I think we can move on to other issues now.

Here's a letter I sent to Real Women a few days ago. I'd like to write them again tonight. I normally don't like smug, but with that hateful organization I can't resist.

--------------------
Dear Real Women,

I'm sure with the recent budget passage, the extension of parliament, the New Brunswick same sex marriage decision, and now Gay Pride celebrations in Toronto, this is a difficult weekend for you. In a spirit of reconciliation, I write to wish you the best Gay Pride weekend you can have under the circumstances, and to assure you that it won't be so bad after all. We are your relatives, your neighbours and your co-workers, and in time you and your children will value, rather than disparage, the diversity in the great changing experiment that has always been the Canadian experience.

Happy Pride Real Women!

One side of me almost wanted to see Harper (if he ever got into power) try to turn back the clock. The very fact that he is talking about it clearly suggested that it's far too early to let down one's guard.

Before I spoil the party, it must be said it's a proud day for me to be a Canadian.

If Harper turned up at the Pride Parade, he would have said, "Don't soak me"

I'm certainly thrilled. I'm quite excited and a bit surprised that they got it all through this session. Harper's attempt to paint the passage of the bill as illegitimate because it has separatist support borders on the ridiculous, considering their alliance to bring down the government only a few weeks ago. More humourously, without the separatists, the Liberals would have a majority!

Apparently Layton bannished a MP to the back benches for voting against the legislation. So much for allowing freedom of expression in the NDP. I would expect such behaviour from the Liberals, especially under Creitien. Getting back to the NDP, since when did a party made to represent the working, socialist, blue collar man deem that gay issues are a priority?

For me, the best approach to the SSM issue would have been a simple referendum. Ask the people of Canada for their view on what marriage should and should not include. Seems silly if SS is allowed to disallow consensual polygamy or consensual close-incestual marriage. No, I'm not inferring that we start the old slippery slope debate. Instead I'm suggesting that, if marriage rules are so important that they must tie up the courts, senate, provinces and commons for months and months, perhaps we should let the people decide directly what marriage should mean.

"since when did a party made to represent the working, socialist, blue collar man deem that gay issues are a priority?"

Issues of equality and progressive policies have always been part of the NDP's/CCF's agenda. See their stances on foreign aid, environmentalism, progressive tax policies. The inevitable conflicts between labour-minded members and progressive-minded members do happen, but likely pale in comparison to the conflicts that occur within the other parties. If you can’t see a connection between a workers’ party and equality issues then you must be blind.

Don't forget that the Netherlands was one of the first two countries to legalise gay marriage and several Scandinavian countries were the first to legalise civil unions, all of which are pretty damn "socialist".

Federally, these days the NDP is moving away from its labour roots and trying to become a progressive, diverse urban party.

"Do you want to stop people from having the same rights as you do so you can maintain your privileges?" perhaps?
