I'm following hkskyline's fine example of putting together a year review thread.
2005 has been quite a well-traveled year for me. For the first
time I've visited countries outside of Europe. My trip to North
America was especially important to me, as I've been wanting
to visit North America for years and years now. I've been
saving money for 2 years to afford that trip, wich I took after graduating from HS.
I'm obsessed with that continent and I really hope I could
succesfully immigrate to Canada or the US after my studies.
I've also visited the Dominican Republic in August, and during the fall I made many daytrips to cities all around Holland. I
can only hope 2006 will be just as great a year, however, I
have planned another trip to Sweden (and possibly Norway)
for this spring.

Seattle, Washington (USA)

There I was, in the US for the first day. And right away, I see a skyscraper that's 4 times as tall as the tallest one in the Netherlands!

1.You got to love that Bank of America tower.

Bellevue, Washington (USA)
Even though it's only a smaller city, I'd like to share some pics of this city.

They have a nice park Downtown. The city is booming, too (notice the skyscraper that's being buildt in the background)!

43. Bellevue Square Mall. Now that's weird, a Mall downtown?! Aren't they supposed to be located in the suburbs? I thought Downtown was a retail area where lots of smaller shops and restaurants can operate.

Now that¡¦s a city everybody wants to live in! Wasn't there another forumer who went there with Christmas, before going to San Fran?

Edmonton, Alberta (Canada)

Another great Canadian city. Very different from Vancouver though, Edmonton is more like a prairie town. I won't post pics of the Mall because I think most of you aren't that interested in malls, but if you want to see some West Edmonton Mall pics, just let me know.

I walked around Downtown with relatives. Here are some pics of Edmonton's skyscrapers:

...But there sure is a lot of it around Edmonton :D ;)
(I'm jealous of the people who live in such huge houses! It's all kind of packed together too much here!)

Leaving North America was hard. I still think about my time there a lot.
I wish I could have gone to college there, but that was too expensive, it would have costed something like $ 25K a year.... and yes, there were scholarships available, but competition for those is really intense, and if you'd win them, you'd still have to pay $ 10K because they only cover tuiton fees... so the nexy 4 years I¡¦ll be studying in Holland.

87. Goodbye Edmonton!

Santiago, Dominican Republic

After I returned to Holland from Canada, I stayed home for 3 days. Then I went to the D.R. with my family for a beach vacation. I had gone to North America by myself (visiting relatives), and this was our family vacation of the year.

The Netherlands

After two great vacations and overcoming a huge jetlag a couple of times ;) , I took a couple of daytrips to different cities in Holland throughout the fall.

Approaching Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Of course it was gonna be overcast, what did you expect for Holland?!

Since I recently posted a thread with all my pictures of different Dutch cities, I won't bother you with all of those right now. These are just the best pics.

Great review Ronald

Are these duplexes??? Really strange looking. I've also noticed out west they don't have many brick homes, basically just ugly siding.
canada193.jpg

Yeah, I thought those were duplexes. They also have a -1 level, kind of like a huge basement.
The house there where I stayed, had a bedroom, bathroom, livingroom and an office at -1 level.
And there aren't many brick houses at all in the west!! Every house was made out of wood. Also, most houses are pretty new.
The very few houses that were made out of brick tended to be the older ones.
Here in NW-Europe, every house is made out of brick.
Houses last quite long too. In the city centres houses can be hundreds of years old.

Great set of pictures Ronald, especially the view looking down at Seattle from your plane! Thank you.

We are used to brick houses in the Toronto area because brick is so readily available here. Brampton is one of the brick-making capitals of the world. Brick is not so readily available in western Canada and most houses out there tend to have vinyl siding or wood siding.

Great tour, Ronald. I've never been to Seattle but it's very photogenic... I'll have to check it out.

I'm obsessed with that continent...

I guess we all want what we don't have... I'm obsessed with Europe.

My god, 4 times ???
Not even twice, 'cause the tallest in the Nederlands is 151 m. in Roterdam:
Gebouw Delftse Poort:
www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=111167
While the tallest in Seattle is 285m Columbia Center
(Bank of America):
www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=119427

Okay, so it isn't 4 times as tall as the one in Rdam. Not even twice as tall.
But it sure felt like the very top of the BoA tower was somewhere up in the clouds when I first saw it.

I won't post pics of the Mall because I think most of you aren't that interested in malls, but if you want to see some West Edmonton Mall pics, just let me know.

I would be interested in pics of West Edmonton Mall. I would like to compare it with some of Toronto's malls. Great pics. Thanks for the world tour.

I have relatives in suburban Edmonton homes, and I've always found them to be ugly. On that point, I find suburban Edmonton to be ugly in general.

sorry for the delayed reply, here are some pics of the WEM:

What do you think? Looks just like any other mall, apart from the ice rink and roller coasters? Or is it really that unique?

I have to say it is a quite typical mall. It could easily be anywhere in the suburbs of North America. Except for the amusements of the rink, roller coaster and water park, nothing sets it apart from the average enclosed shopping centre.

nice pics.. would love to have you shoot some Toronto Pictures this summer... thanks for the world tour!
