I'm following hkskyline's fine example of putting together a year review thread.
2005 has been quite a well-traveled year for me. For the first
time I've visited countries outside of Europe. My trip to North
America was especially important to me, as I've been wanting
to visit North America for years and years now. I've been
saving money for 2 years to afford that trip, wich I took after graduating from HS.
I'm obsessed with that continent and I really hope I could
succesfully immigrate to Canada or the US after my studies.
I've also visited the Dominican Republic in August, and during the fall I made many daytrips to cities all around Holland. I
can only hope 2006 will be just as great a year, however, I
have planned another trip to Sweden (and possibly Norway)
for this spring.
Seattle, Washington (USA)
There I was, in the US for the first day. And right away, I see a skyscraper that's 4 times as tall as the tallest one in the Netherlands!
1.You got to love that Bank of America tower.
2.
3. Pioneer Square.
More of the CBD of America¡¦s third largest city on the westcoast.
4.
5.
6.
7. Lost in an urban jungle.
8.
9.
10. One of my favorite buildings in Seattle:
11.
12. They are allways constructing around Seattle:
13.
-oops, already got this one-
14. What a fantastic skyline!
15.
16.Of course, you can't forget about Starbucks when you're in Seattle
Yes, we did went up the Space Needle like a million other tourists... but hey, the view is great so why not?
17.
18.
19.The monorail to Westlake Center, downtown Seattle's retail district:
20. The Westin towers in the background:
21.
22.
23. Just a quiet street downtown:
24. Inside Pike's Place Market:
Now, some more skyline shots!
25.
26.
27.
28.
29.
30.Seattle has, per capita, more pleasure boats than any other US city (despite the rainy weather!)
31.
32. Only in liberal Seattle would they have a statue of Lenin...
33.We also went to a baseball game! Too bad the Mariners lost though!
34. Let's go downtown again!
35.
36.
37. Now, THAT's a Canyon effect!
38.
Lots of highway lanes everywhere in North America:
39.
Bellevue, Washington (USA)
Even though it's only a smaller city, I'd like to share some pics of this city.
They have a nice park Downtown. The city is booming, too (notice the skyscraper that's being buildt in the background)!
40.
41.
42.
43.
43. Bellevue Square Mall. Now that's weird, a Mall downtown?! Aren't they supposed to be located in the suburbs? I thought Downtown was a retail area where lots of smaller shops and restaurants can operate.
Some more pics of Seattle, Washington (USA)
44. Another mall, in the northers suburbs of Seattle:
45.
46.
47. I felt bad about leaving Seattle.
48. saying goodbye to Seattle:
Vancouver, B.C. (Canada)
Now that¡¦s a city everybody wants to live in! Wasn't there another forumer who went there with Christmas, before going to San Fran?
49. Checking out the beautiful skyline:
50.
51. The Lionsgate bridge:
52. Stanley Park:
53. Third Beach in Stanley Park:
54. There was a couple getting married that day!
55.
56. Man, look at those mountains in the background...
57
58. Now that's density!
59.
It was overcast so that's why some of these pics are kind of dark ... well it gives you a realistic impression of Vancouver¡¦s weather!
60.
61.
62.
Downtown Vancouver is AWESOME!
63.
64.
65.
66.
67.
68. Chinatown. Right now I'm writing a paper about spatial segregation of ethnic minorities in Vancouver and Toronto. It's interresting to compare both cities! Most minorities in both cities are Asians.
69. Expensive condo¡¦s:
70.
Even though this is an urban forum, I'd like to show some of the natural beauty surrounding Vancouver and Seattle:
71. Near Seattle (Olympic N.P.)
72. Near Vancouver (Lynn Canyon)
Edmonton, Alberta (Canada)
Another great Canadian city. Very different from Vancouver though, Edmonton is more like a prairie town. I won't post pics of the Mall because I think most of you aren't that interested in malls, but if you want to see some West Edmonton Mall pics, just let me know.
I walked around Downtown with relatives. Here are some pics of Edmonton's skyscrapers:
73.
74.
75.
76.
77.
78.
79.
80.
81.
82. Respecting my heritage!
I have no idea what urban sprawl is...
83.
84.
85.
86.
...But there sure is a lot of it around Edmonton
(I'm jealous of the people who live in such huge houses! It's all kind of packed together too much here!)
Leaving North America was hard. I still think about my time there a lot.
I wish I could have gone to college there, but that was too expensive, it would have costed something like $ 25K a year.... and yes, there were scholarships available, but competition for those is really intense, and if you'd win them, you'd still have to pay $ 10K because they only cover tuiton fees... so the nexy 4 years I¡¦ll be studying in Holland.
87. Goodbye Edmonton!
Santiago, Dominican Republic
After I returned to Holland from Canada, I stayed home for 3 days. Then I went to the D.R. with my family for a beach vacation. I had gone to North America by myself (visiting relatives), and this was our family vacation of the year.
88.
89.

Some pictures of Sosua, where the resort was located :
92.
93.
94.
95. And this is Samana, an upcoming resorttown more to the west of the norther shore of the island
The Netherlands
After two great vacations and overcoming a huge jetlag a couple of times , I took a couple of daytrips to different cities in Holland throughout the fall.
Approaching Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Of course it was gonna be overcast, what did you expect for Holland?!
96.
Since I recently posted a thread with all my pictures of different Dutch cities, I won't bother you with all of those right now. These are just the best pics.
