Rob Ford's Toronto

Now Toronto:

"Is Rob Ford untouchable?
The latest Forum poll would have us think so, but don’t believe it"

"News flash: what the latest Forum poll actually says is that, among Ford’s supporters – let me repeat, among Ford’s supporters – “the true citizens of Ford Nation,†as Forum president Lorne Bozinoff calls them, 42 per cent think he’s still a viable candidate for mayor.
Read another way, that means that less than half of the mayor’s backers, as opposed to the electorate at large, think he’s still electable.Only, it didn’t come out that way in news reports."

This thread had always shown at least an attempt at decorum. Precious few annoying fat jokes about the mayor, precious few references to Doolittle's looks.

The Alana thing however...really unfortunate.

If you read the context of the post the remark was used in, the answer is obviously...no.

This thread has become remarkably pc all of a sudden????????

It has nothing to do with being PC or not, it's about having a little respect for those of us who cringe when someone blurts out whatever comes to mind without a filter and without caring what anyone else thinks. Wait......Rob, is that you?

Doolittle is a journalist. Her writing skills, investigative skills etc, would be up for discussion. Perhaps her looks, if you are discussing who might play her in this seedy saga.

The entire point is that her good looks are already an issue, as people are mentioning that point more than her journalistic skills...it's already out there...I'm just pointing it out.

In a cruel twist of fate, I think she should be played by Gwyneth Paltrow.

I grew up here and I think Ontario is the best country in the world with Toronto being its centre of awesome but this fiasco has brought doubt to my mind. Not to mention how sad it makes me. Mike Harris was a picnic with a bottle of wine on Ward's Island Beach compared with this coonta.

And to all the doubters of effect on our collective reputation and international relations I have this to say: you are bloody insular and need to get out more.

Perhaps you should do the same. Local political scandals happen all over the world and are forgotten as fast as they rise.

This is no Watergate, and a few months from now it will all be over. Forget all the nonsense on this discussion, this isn't a season of the Wire, this is the intersection of some drug dealing local thugs, a wife beating drunk and his idiot brother. You'll find out in good time that there is no connection between Rob Ford and Anthony Smith's death, that Rob Ford is still a drunk, and that no one cares any more.

Tone, inflections, etc.....hard to see through text.

Kind of how I got in trouble for throwing around the coonta word as I do in real life with my friends.

I may be with internet friends here, but it's not the same as hanging out with my faux-British junglist posse.

And this has nothing to do with how the pollsters have been treating him...

There is a huge difference between saying someone is nice looking, to describing how f*&kable someone is.
This is not a porn forum. There are lots of place to go on the internet if that is what you would like to discuss.
Many different kinds of people come to UT, of all genders, races, ages, sexual orientations, etc.

Besides, it was a sexist comment, and it is not surprising to be called out on it.

Sorry but how the hell can you be so sure on as much evidence as the rest of us?

I believe most of the speculation and commentary concerning Alana was fair game, as the nature of her relationship with Ford reflects back on him and his activities, and that's what we're interested in here. Just as we feel free to speculate on the role and the character of all Ford's associates. There were a couple argumentative tangents spinning off her story that may have made the discussion seem long-winded, but that's what happens here - yesterday it was cellphones and fair democratic representation*. Unfortunately, boyzone comments towards Doolittle, who as a journalist is ancillary the story, does undermine any argument that interest in Alana or any other "scantily-clad" females who might make an appearance is driven by reasonable curiosity and investigation rather than titillation.

* and now as the "who should play Ford in the movie" discussion happens for the ninth time.

To be honest, I think the Mike Harris years were far more damaging to Toronto than the last 3 years of the Ford Bros.
The name "John Snobelen" still makes me cringe.

I know you're in your 20's, so you may not remember the worst aspects of the Harris years (which occurred when Harris himself was running the show; not the final chapter with Ernie Eves...).

In fact, I would argue that the Mike Harris years directly contributed to the rise of a "Ford Nation" within Toronto.
