Rob Ford's Toronto

Section 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights states that "Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: ... freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication."

Everyone's entitled to their opinions here. I am not a Ford supporter and can't fathom how anyone could be, but that's their choice. The Star can publish whatever it deems appropriate. If you don't care for the paper, don't read it. I started reading this thread when it was all about the existence of an incriminating video of Ford. Now that I've gone back to page 1 of this thread, its title is Mayor Rob Ford's Toronto. Supporters and non supporters alike will all weigh in, and that's the way it should be.

Remember when The Sun printed a cartoon depicting David Miller as Hitler? That's much worse than the cartoons The Star have done on Ford.

Or everything Sue-Ann Levy has written, ever.

I know a lot of the Ford supporters always point to the KFC photo as trash journalism and I’ll admit that it wasn’t a high-point but they never acknowledge the context of the photo. It was after rob and doug made a huge spectacle of their clumsy PR weight-loss stunt. Remember, the scale? The weigh-in phot-ops? That was all their doing. Then of course Robbie started whining about the press hounding him – at the event he scheduled and invited the media to.

Even the April 19 2012 Toronto Sun front page had Rob Ford's head attached to Colonel Sanders' cartoon body, with links to the video online. It's not like that whole incident was an exclusive Toronto Star media mockery....

Not to mention that the phrase is always "they resort constantly to low-blow, TMZ-style videos like the KFC one"... but there is not a single additional example of that. I don't know, I thought "constantly" meant something else.

Don't be silly:

'I don't know what you mean by "glory",' Alice said.

Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. 'Of course you don't — till I tell you. I meant "there's a nice knock-down argument for you!"'

'But "glory" doesn't mean "a nice knock-down argument",' Alice objected.

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master — that's all.'

After all, if "socialist" can mean "sometimes votes for a tax increase", then "constantly" can mean "maybe one time".

Word is trickling out that one particular Project Traveller warrant is going to shed light on Ford's involvement with the case.

It's good and bad. The bad: given that Ford has not been arrested or had any warrant served, none of the collected evidence criminally implicates the Mayor in the case. The good: the police have obtained evidence that does involve Rob Ford with those people who've been arrested. It will come out because the Mayor will likely be subpoenaed as a witness. This evidence could be "the video", more photos taken with the accused, recorded phone calls, or all of the above. Any of these is going to re-ignite the media circus and calls for the Mayor to explain his involvement.

The timeline is unclear but none of this is likely to come out soon. At the end of August, only the media's lawyers will be allowed to view the (redacted) warrants in order to make a case for making them public. If granted, selected warrants would be made public no sooner than the Fall. If not, there'll probably be trials some time next year smack in the middle of the election with details of Ford's involvement coming out then. Heck, the election is just over a year away at this point. Might as well get this stuff released just before people go to the polls.

I agree with what you said, but it should be pointed out that Urban Toronto isn't under the jurisdiction of the Charter.

Thanks MetroMan. I think there are very few people who believed that there was any evidence that *criminally* implicated Ford anyways. This is all about political suicide.

Ideally, the closer to the election the information comes out, the better it will be. It just can't come out afterwards. Its like the Price Is Right rules (closest without going over) :D

This will be interesting...

I just hope that the evidence is conclusive. The last thing we need is for people to see some inconclusive evidence and declare that this is just a leftist conspiracy, giving Ford a last minute boost at the polls.

I agree -- I think only the most extreme anti-Fordites believed that he was involved with any Project Traveller crimes, which seemed to more gang-related. The "crimes" Ford seems to have committed relate to personal drug use, which is very different and much less serious.

By the police?

Ford Nation has accused Karen Stintz of being a "leftwing backstabber", the Globe & Mail of being leftwing for publishing the Doug Ford hash investigation and if the Conservatives support an alternative candidate for Mayor in 2014, Ford Nation will be calling Tim Hudak a left wing pinko. When the police release evidence implicating Rob Ford in Project Traveller, the police will be labelled as controlled by the left wing unions. Just watch.
