Rob Ford's Toronto

Hidden in the Hudak mingles with the Fords article in the Star seems to be new polling numbers. From who though? Can anyone find out?

Though 45% is still *fairly* high, i.e. not too far beneath what got him elected. (Of course, "approval" numbers and "would you vote for him versus x" numbers are different things entirely. Still, if the momentum's downward, something's worth monitoring...)

"Phew that stinks!" ..the only reason she and her left wing colleagues are pissed-off is because they were not invoved in that decision..otherwise if Ford had gone for it, Kristyn and her cronies would have been the first to shoot it down.
Nothing but socialist propaganda...cant believe she finds time to write that crap.

I didn't take civics. Maybe you could explain to me why we have 44 (43?) councilors at City Hall.

The 45% was before he went to the Premier to beg for money to close his funding gap for his "private" subway project and before he *ahemsorry* his brother started talking about ferris wheels, malls, monorails, and his private meetings with those Aussies. I'd love to see more numbers now.

Wow is this some sort of HATE ROB FORD CULT.

First of all, get your facts straight. The Transit City plan was to recieve 17.5 billion dollars in Ontario and Canada (governments) funding over 12 years. Thats not including the city's portion. Even if it was cost effective, the plan includes throwing hundreds of large vehicles (much larger than current streetcars) onto torontos already packed streets. It is more reliable to make an above ground or below ground system that is independant and immune to street traffic delays.

Also, again, get your facts straight. Right from the ttc website.

"Metrolinx cost estimate for the combined project is $8.2B (2010$)"

Still far less than the origional plan and far more logical.

Hating Rob Ford is not a Cult. I foresee a day when Toronto celebrates a civic holiday commemorating the day Ford's were kicked out of the mayors office.

Hahaha ..good luck:D:D

Before anyone gets kicked out, i foresee a day when Toronto will be a city for everyone, and not just for the Pinkos:)

Ah, yeah. Message-board populism. Yahoos with execrable taste and writing skills "having their say", using convenient epithets like "pinkos", etc. It's already led people with any sense to keep a measured distance away from newspaper comment threads...

For a Toronto Mayor, 45% is crazy *low*. For comparison, David Miller was still riding the 70% wave at the end of his first term in office. It wasn't until the city workers strike that he dropped. Lastman's numbers were decent until the end too -- and he had a god damned 87 per cent approval rating in 2000.

Dropping below 50% less than a year into term is unheard of for a municipal politician. If these numbers are true, they're staggering.

Though I'm still reserving judgment, because Ford populism is such a weird thing; and of course, Ford Nation's likely to spin the numbers positively in terms like mine...

Approval-wise, where was Ottawa's Larry O'Brien at a similar point in his mayoralty? (Just wondering.)

So true. How many cities have planned their downtown core revitalization around a mall and saw that fall through. London Ontario had the Mews and Galleria and there was another mall planned by Campeau at one point where the hockey arena sits now. Galleria, once filled with shops is now dead. The Mews is mostly surface parking.

I was in Sudbury a few weeks ago, and their downtown revitalization seemed to focus around the Rainbow Centre, a stucco decorated mall/hotel complex with a massive parking garage. The area around the complex was littered with closed shops, and shop that were open 9-5 weekdays, and closed weekends. The "Mall" was filled with generic store, and a Rainbow Cinemas.

It already was. That's why I and several others have chosen Toronto for our new home. However i'm starting to think i might have made the wrong decision.

That mall was the centre of downtown 25+ years ago. They've been trying to revitalize ever since.

StCatharinesCitizen, have you read the environment assessment reports? These detail the road corridors and the traffic mitigation measures that could have been put into place. Not to mention the local consultations that took place and found general widespread support.

I'm sure there's countless threads here about the LRT pros/cons. I'm not about to rehash it all.
