Rob Ford's Toronto

Muzik provided the alcohol for the Ford Fest parties but we don't know who paid for it because there's no paper trail.
Also, Muzik wants to eliminate competition. Same thing that Boardwalk Pub did which Ford was against. Speaking of which, Ford was also upset that the family that owns BP donated to Sandra Bussin's campaign, meanwhile family behind Muzik has donated to the Ford campaign.

Something stinks.
Muzik night club doesn't like the competition from these events and asks RoFo to get the city to ban them. RoFo doesn't want any heat coming to him, especially when he gets his drugs at Muzik. So he gets Mammo to go to bat for the lobbyists from Muzik.

Bullshit! We have a ferry to the islands? Impossible! Allow *ships* in our *harbour*? But what about preserving the harbourfront? That would lead to increased traffic and all sorts of nasty activities! No, no, that's not real, a hacker must've got into the City webservers and put that page up as a joke.

lmao!

So now we know who runs things there.
@reporterdonpeat: Exhibition Place board votes not to allow electronic dance music events in buildings it controls. #TOpoli

Cllr Gord Perks says today's board decision likely cost Exhibition Place approximately $1 million in annual revenue #TOpoli

Looks like Ford has spawned his own "Gravy Train".

Yep, we should remove all marine vessels from the harbour. The only way to get from the mainland to the island and back will be by zipline. Or maybe a ballista.

It all starts with the black licorice and goes downhill from there.

The hard stuff. It's legal in Holland, you know.

Yup, that stinks.

edit: If they weren't corrupt and they were really thinking of the children, they could have agreed on a compromise to limit the minimum age for "all ages" events allowed there. These events are legal, safer than the normal nonsense that goes down at the Top-40 clubs on Richmond, and bring in significant much-needed money.

Don't know if there's a connection, but Pantalone lobbies for Muzik now.

Also, the family behind Liberty (of the Liberty Grand, Courthouse, Rosewater, Casa Loma) had some pretty swanky private receptions for David Miller when he was mayor.

I bartended at Muzik for a brief period. To see Zlatko caution about the perils of drug dealers is a bit of a laugh.

I suppose it's territory he knows well...

I think we shouldn't be so shocked when it looks like large nightclub owners might be, ahem, trying to "exert" some influence in the political process.

Safer than Muzik itself! Wasn't someone shot outside there not too long ago?

Re: exerting 'influence'. I guess the reason it is surprising to me, is because the corruption is so blatant.

Further thoughts on EDM parties:

A friend of mine worked the last big Avicii party at the Ex, and this whole "think of the children" thing isn't coming from nowhere. By his account, there were some seriously messed-up 15-year-old-girls who were far, far from home. Cabbies didn't want to take them because of liability. Bit of a gongshow from that perspective.

Zlatko is probably not concerned about appealing to the crowd that most people think of when they think of their 90's-era "raver" conception. But here's the thing: raves aren't just an underground thing anymore. They're big business. Promoters like LiveNation do huge rave parties. And while a fraction of the people these events attract might be pill-popping PLUR types, there are plenty of King St/Richmond St bro types as well. Arguably more, in fact.

"EDM parties" are just big festival events. They're like giant club nights with famous DJs. The reason Z is lobbying is he's afraid that he won't be the only game in town in that area.

What's great about Muzik is it's right on the Gardiner and right near the 400. It has huge amounts of parking. It's also a massive space. It is _the_ destination for the 905 to come downtown and get trashed/have the "club experience". Which for most guys means chasing girls and trying to impress them by spending hundreds of dollars on bottle service.

If dudes from the GTA periphery start thinking the action is at the Tiesto show at the Direct Energy Centre instead of Muzik, that is going to directly eat into his bottom line. Hence the concern.
