Rob Ford's Toronto

I take back my support for him and his brother for what I called a few pages back, the first thing I actually supported them on. Slimy bigots.

"Bike", "cyclist", "library/libraries" don't work either. I've written The Mayor asking for an explanation and copied the Office of the Integrity Commissioner and all City Councillors on this issue. I can't wait to hear back.

probably should cc all the national news stations and the human rights commissioner too, especially where the anti-gay matter is concerned.

Man you guys are overly sensitive. He's allowed to chose where he wants donations to go. It's his challenge.

"The Fords, who will conduct public weigh-ins every Monday until June 18, encouraged the people of Toronto to join them. Residents can declare pledges to the charity of their choice at the challenge’s website, CutTheWaist.ca." - http://www.thestar.com/news/cityhallpolitics/article/1116253--rob-ford-weighs-330-wants-to-lose-50

or go right to their website,

"Make a pledge to the charity of your choice and help the Ford brothers cut the waist" - http://cutthewaist.ca/

I think it has to do with the fact that within the first minutes of the website going live, it was spammed with a bunch of phony and "ironic" donations, most of them festuring "gay" and "bicycle" in it. I am in no way saying that Mayor Ford's actions against this are true, but if people are going to use this as a stream to vent their frustrations and take jabs at the Mayor, well then I believe their hurting their own cause because there might be legit Gay and Cyclist charities that aren't going to benefit from this.

That's the way I see it..

Read about it here -- there is a screen shot:

We thank the "mushy middle" in council (lead by the two Joshes) for growing their collective spine. Mayor Ford may try to claim some victory or other, but by and large he is now effectively being reigned in by council as many of us predicted.

Speaking of mushy middle, the "Cut The Waist" thing is strictly face-saving stuff and I wish it was being paid less attention, although I loved Rick Mercer's one-liner about it (i.e. will the mayor will become irritable and cranky on the diet - LOL - it would be hard to tell a difference).

23-21 vote undoes many of Mayor Rob Ford’s cuts

James: Ford loses the gamble

This is essentially what I had predicted near the early part of this thread: A Mayor so inept, so contrary to the soul of Toronto that City Council takes over and effectively becomes its own Mayor, locking the Mayor in name only out of the process, or at least out of the final result.

The bad news for Ford doesn't end here. His popularity has plummeted so close to the beginning of his tenure -- even amongst those who voted for him -- and as we get closer and closer to the next election, the number of councillors backing Ford will continue to dwindle. They won't want to go down with the sinking ship. 20 councillors voted against this all out reversal of all cuts, not to be mistaken as being in favour of the Mayor. I'm willing to bet that a significant part of them would have voted Yes if some of the acceptable cuts had not been included in this motion.

21 is the Mayor's best possible number of support going forward. One is himself, and the other is his brother who appears unlikely to finish his term given his comments in recent months. By the 2013 budget, I'm willing to bet that that number will be down by at least 25%.

We've got a lame duck Mayor. 3 years from the end of his term.

He really didn't help his case last night after the vote when at the press conference he compared the opposing councillors to dogs.

Are you serious?

Someone asked him how he felt about those councillors who often support him who decided to vote for the ammendments, and his response was something to the effect of -- Putting money in front of them is like putting food in front of dogs. They can't control themselves.

Funny someone tipping the scale at over 300lbs should say that - I wonder who is calling what "dogs". As to the cutthewaist challenge - please, what a naked attempt at distracting the budget issue AND playing the jingo yet again. If they really wanted to lose weight, follow what Miller did in his second term - there is no need to make a big fuzz out of nothing.

For the record, here is city council records on who voted for/against what:

Given that Ford's inner circle were defeated on so many issues, you have to wonder how they are going to keep backing him. Do Stintz, Thompson, and Milczyn really want to go into the next election on the platform of "I tried to close your libraries and swimming pools, but failed - please re-elect me, so I can try again"?

nfitz:

Personally I am surprised Stintz didn't defect much (if at all) and toed the party line to the bitter end- bet she is squirming left right and centre during the votes. I can see her jumping ship eventually - as it stands right now it's heading straight for the berg.

And where is Ron Moeser? He missed ALL the votes!

It was a joy reading Sue-Ann Levy last night. Nothing was beneath her as she gnashed her teeth: smearing Josh Colle for merely being his father's son, petty schoolyard insults, apoplectic fantasies of things to come. Read her column, it will make you feel good.
