Facebook is American. There is no concept as hate speech in American law. You are perfectly free there to say any nasty, bigoted things you want, including advocating for slavery, or simply the generic execution of people based on race (I suppose that advocating for executing specific people based on race might be a crime there ...)

That's their free speech. As such, I'd think if Facebook were to ban people based on bigotry, they'd be open to litigation.

Should the phone company not have given Ernst Zundel a phone? Should Staples refuse to sell him paper and ink?

I very much disagree with how this is done in America. Recall that they refuse to extradite Canadians charged with hate crimes, because hate crimes are not a crime in the US.
This is why I call Fakebook and Sh!tter antisocial media.

Absolutely, completely, wildly incorrect.

First of all, hate crime is very much illegal in the US: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_crime_laws_in_the_United_States

Second of all, "free speech" is in regards to *the government*. This is the text of the first amendment to the US Constitution, emphasis mine:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Private enterprise is not Congress. Private enterprise does not make law. Private enterprise is not mentioned in the first amendment. If you walk into my hypothetical American restaurant and call me a f***ing c***sucker, I can tell you to get the hell out and in some situations can even use force to remove you if you don't comply. Similarly Facebook can ban ANYONE for any reason whatsoever. Ironically, a law preventing them from doing so would be infringing on their right to free speech.

Posting hate and discriminatory speech is against FB TOS:

from the safety portion of their TOS:

You will follow our Promotions Guidelines and all applicable laws if you publicize or offer any contest, giveaway, or sweepstakes (“promotion”) on Facebook.

Ah, now I understand.

Free speech does not apply to private enterprises.

Believe it or not, many major websites that use COPPA actively kick anyone under 13 without a signed parental consent form.

UT is COPPA-complaint, despite COPPA being American law and UT being a Canadian website.

Yeah, recall A&E suspending that Duck Dynasty guy for being an bigot on the record. They had every right to suspend their own employee (although they reversed it, because they are cowards) and free speech had no bearing. That didn't stop the Sarah Palins of the world from whining about their rights or whatever, as if Obama personally came in and cuffed him during the interview.

Ford believes and says a lot of stupidly weird things.

Mamma always said stupid weird is as stupid weird does.

...and believes that Wikipedia is a lefty conspiracy run by Jimmy Wales and his lefty cabal.

I know someone who thinks Wikipedia is a "Conservative" propaganda tool, like Conservapedia.

my thinking is more that
a) he's voting against it anyways, and
b) nothing pleases right-wing family-values types more than railing against child molesters; I'm sure he'd say the same about funding for the arts: "we should use that money to catch more child molesters!"

The bizarre linkage at the end is just, well... he's a screwed-up guy. But if you're opposing funding for something, and some people think you're being insensitive, you can't go wrong by saying you want to catch more child molesters instead, right? ;)

I agree with what you are saying but I am also trying to figure out why he is a screwed up guy. Having worked with people with addiction and mental health issues, it is interesting to try and decipher what is going on with our very troubled mayor.

This is an article about recovery. Say what you will about Russel Brand, he is a pretty engaging writer. Here he is writing about something he knows very well: addiction.

"Without these fellowships I would take drugs. Because even now the condition persists. Drugs and alcohol are not my problem — reality is my problem. Drugs and alcohol are my solution.

If this seems odd to you, it is because you are not an alcoholic or a drug addict. You are likely one of the 90 per cent of people who can drink and use drugs safely. I have friends who can smoke weed, swill gin, even do crack, and then merrily get on with their lives. For me this is not an option. I will relinquish all else to ride that buzz to oblivion. Even if it began as a timid glass of chardonnay on a ponce’s yacht, it would end with me necking the bottle, swimming to shore and sprinting to Bethnal Green in search of a crack house."

for anyone interested, i was at indigo's bay/bloor location, and sales of Crazy Town have apparently surpassed some kind of high volume mark and are now being offered at 40% off (i don't understand how that works)

so 40% off, then add 5% gst, total $18.87

:)
