Rob Ford's Toronto

You see, Microsoft is looking for a new CEO.

Let's imagine Rob Ford being the CEO of Microsoft. He would push ads equating Apple users with downtown elitist lefties and Windows being for the everyman. We all know that Windows computers are generally dirt cheap (and their lack of quality and high depreciation rate shows).

Are you seriously suggesting that Windows and Apple computers use different hardware?

MS FUD has always included the idea that Apple computers are not compatible with Windows, and in the good old days this was mostly true when everyone enjoyed their own standards.

However, the fight between Apple and MS is a great metaphor for modern partisan politics. Robbie professes that he is "Right of Centre", but how far "right" of centre? The Fords like to make fun of actual Centrists, just like any fundamentalist would. They are unnatural, or flip floppers, to be grouped as worse then socialist, communists, or lefties; from Robbie's and Dougie's point of view. This allows them to promote partisan politics and tap into the other 2 levels of government to make their jobs easier.

Anyway, 180 degree oppositions, ala attack ads, manipulate voters into voting reactionary. Vote against something by voting for "us" instead of actually voting for something.

The problem with MS using old metaphors like "hardware" is tired and speak only to a generation that does not understand "software", this is one of the boons of Apple, and why MS is moving away from this metaphor. Services are key and that is also why the mayor is promoting superficial appearances and increased services for the user, or rather, voter.

Or something like that... ;)

It's a good thing apple switched to mass produced intel hardware, now it's easier then ever to run OSX on a cheap PC, switch to Linux when you need high uptime or any flavor of windows when you need compatibility.
I work in broadcasting and the only Apple branded computers are the one or two macs in the graphics design department....mostly for the old timers.

I have been trying to remember what the Mayor has actually done for job creation since reading this page of the thread and I can't, other than contracting out garbage collection. I feel slightly sheepish.

No jobs were created here. Good paying City jobs with benefits were eliminated, then replaced by lower paying private sector jobs.

TTM:

I am not selling my iPad 2 (will be giving it away as a pass-along when iPad 5 gets announced) but $300? That's rather high - are we talking about the 64GB model?

AoD

On eBay I see the used 16 GB WiFi iPad 2 going for as much as $290.00. One was just sold on an auction for $200. I'm sure you could get much more if you had a 32GB model or one with a cellular connection.

This is a much better idea than giving Microsoft one's old iPad for a $200 gift card.

Now, back to politics.

You see, Michael Dell of Dell Computers once said to Steve Jobs 14 years ago that "Apple is an irrelevant company." Now, Dell is eating his words, as Apple is the largest tech company, while Dell is floundering.

Dell is politically conservative, while Jobs is politically liberal. Dell computers are commonly found in conventional offices (as well as in conventional computer labs (found in schools, libraries, and universities)), as Dell likes to give discounts to organizations, while Macs are generally found in more creative spaces (as well as with post-secondary students with their MacBooks).

He finally took his own advice, he sold the company and gave the money back to the shareholders. :)

Actually, Jobs was a centrist, after all, he was Buddhist.

Are you guys seriously derailing onto apple vs. microsoft and fucking ipad resale value? Jesus.

Slow and unfavorable news week, and stuff like this happens. :)

We have made connections of Ford and his politics of running a city business, and its propagandism, with the standard tactics used in the tech industry. We just strayed a tad. :)

And I prefer the term "rat hole".

Honestly, I'm not sure if Ford's worthy of this hifalutin discussion, And that Summer Of Ford video *really* merits reflection--not least for its being the inept vanity brainchild of one of his new (and supposedly the most "downtown creative class" of his) assistants...

Unfortunately Ford has managed to stay out of trouble for yet another week. I really wish his handlers would let him loose.

That's the problem, the more he screws up the better the security becomes. Someone needs to get pics, etc. of Robb doing lines off a dead prostitute, or an underage one.
