It was something drum118 mentioned above, and a couple other posters also referred to. My interpretation -- GO Richmond Hill would still originate from Union, but would begin to interline with the DRL around Gerrard Square (a junction would be built into the station there). The interlining would continue via tunnel (three tracks) all the way up to Don Mills, just north of Lawrence (my guess), where the GO train would then merge back onto the track to Richmond Hill.

Nice idea. I just don't think it has a chance in hell, it's like the SmartTrack Eglinton Spur all over again. Huge cost, large community impact.
I think re-activating the Leaside Spur and sending trains to Summerhill via CP's midtown corridor would be an alternative. Costly as well in the sense that it involves building the Missing Link, but it would be a tertiary objective; primary and secondary being 2WAD service on the Milton line, and a new GO midtown line into the east.
You still get your multi-use trail and trains out of the Don to boot.
