That would be an insult to so many if that person got a state funeral. She was never in it for anyone but herself and maybe her son Peter. But she’s still inexplicably popular, so maybe Trudeau will do it if he thinks it’ll help keep some seats from flipping in the next election.

True. How many Mayors are Order of Canada recipients and have former prime ministers come to their retirement gala however?

Not to mention she was likely one of the best known Mayors in recent Canadian history. She was also known around the world.

I am not suggesting we give every podunk mayor a state funeral but this wasn't any ordinary mayor.

Simply put, she was heavily active in Provincial and Federal politics for years. More to the point she was made Chancellor of Sheridan College.

How many mayors have her credentials?

I have no doubt that if she was younger, she would have been made Governor General, Lieutenant Governor or an Ambassador.

Only if they get the band to play this.

All I can say is that its a not uncommon take I'm seeing today on various social feeds (though the specifics will vary)

I can support this much w/o difficulty; w/o disagreeing w/any of the rest.

My over-all time of her take in office was two-fold:

1) Queen of Sprawl

2) Not fiscally responsible, because she financed Mississauga on the DC (Development Charge) credit card, keeping taxes low (this means much higher taxes when ill-planned infrastructure comes due for renewal). And much like former North York (and Toronto) Mayor Lastman, her social service policies amounted to giving someone transit fare to Toronto.

However, I can say, her time w/Riviera (Seniors Home/LTC manager/owner) in which she was inclined to defend an, I think, indisputably poor record was rather hard to take.

Queen of Sprawl I get, I moved to Winston Churchill and Derry Road in 1976 and saw the entire city go from farmland to car dependent suburbs, with developers footing the bill for roads, sewers and other infrastructure that now needs replacing but the density and thus tax base is too small. Hazel's legacy on this will take another 100 years to undo. But where's the racism? During her term as mayor the city became one of the most diverse in the country, if not continent. I get old people make a lot of casual racist remarks, but did Hazel try to slow or stop brown and black folks from moving into Mississauga?

The irony is that her pal, Doug Ford cut most of Ontario's cities' development fees. Fees that Mississauga used for the brand new infrastructure. Infrastructure that will be expensive to upkeep over time because of the sprawl which means more material (lengths of pipe, for example).

The mere suggestion of a state funeral for Hazel is an absolute joke. I don't consider mere longevity as a mayor an "accomplishment" - that's simply an indictment of the lazy voters of Mississauga. You'll find precious little in terms of actual achievements during her interminably long 36 year reign. The emperor has no clothes.

The City and/or the province can do as lavish or plain as it likes, but a State Funeral has to come from the PMO and invokes multiple elements such a lying in state, military vigils, escorts, honour guards, etc., etc. etc.

Onley was offered one because he was a former Lt. Gov. Compare their accomplishments, contributions or whatever all you want, one held a vice-regal position, one did not.

The gender's pure happenstance--I'd refer to it being "penis envy" even if it were Elizabeth Dowdeswell rather than David Onley we were dealing with.
