PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

"Technically" she has reserve powers and can dismiss the Prime Minister that has never been done. It is asking for trouble.
Well the reserve powers of the Crown (G-G); although largely symbolic, are fairly extensive, I'm not aware that she has the power to recall Parliament; that rests with the Speaker. The PM can be dismissed if they has lost the confidence of the House and refuse to leave. That has not yet been established.

Indeed, PP says the PM has lost the confidence of the House, but this has not been proven by a vote in the House. Saying Singh will bring down the government is not the same as voting to do so.

Jagmeet has clarified that the NDP will vote non-confidence irrespective of who the leader/PM is.

This means there is no option to recall Parliament for the Liberals, and the choice is only to go to the polls or to pro-rogue while they get a new leader, then go to the polls.

A primer on prorogation in Canada:

****

Overall there is no binding precedent limiting the length of a prorogation...........

However, the much noted one by Harper is interesting in that regard, as the GG made the prorogation conditional:

From the wiki above:

Russell disclosed that Jean granted the prorogation on two conditions: parliament would reconvene soon and, when it did, the Cabinet would present a proposed budget, a vote on which is a confidence matter.[2] This, Russell said, set a precedent that would prevent future prime ministers from advising the prorogation of parliament "for any length of time for any reason".

Of course that's not what his actual letter to the GG says.....

She certainly has the power to 'confer'........

@Richard White is correct that technically the GG could dismiss the government.............but that's not on........

In review the rules of Parliamentary procedure.............a recall (not a summoning) is generally done by the Speaker in consultation/on advice of the government.

The GG does not normally have role.

Technically, parliament is recessed now, but within an ongoing session of Parliament.

The nuance here is that post-election it is the GG who 'summons' parliament; though this is typically done conferring with the incoming government.

True that his social media post uses different words, "confer" is different than "inform" which is the word he uses in his letter and is more prescriptive.

I do not agree that the Crown has the unilateral authority to dismiss a sitting government absent some other condition that interferes with a operation of a 'responsible government', which is the foundation of the reserve powers. I also do not agree that the Crown has the unilateral authority to reconvene a House that has risen. Pretty much all of the Crown's powers are 'with the advice and consent of'. Not a constitutional scholar, so stand to be corrected.

The concept of the Confidence Convention means that the Executive (PM and Cabinet) have the support of a majority of members (single party, supporting parties or coalition). So far, the House has not ruled on that except in the media.

I get it; we have a three-ring circus, but I don't think anybody wants a system where those who seek power can unilaterally bring down those who democratically have it, or where a single person - an appointee - can actively direct the business of parliamentary democracy.

I wonder.. would the CPC, BQ and NDP consider a coalition government?
Once the House formally decides that PM/Liberals no longer hold its confidence, I suppose the three leaders could go to the G-G with a proposal that their collective currently sitting members would have said confidence, she could allow them to form a government. Not sure about the BQ but I don't see the CPC and NDP being able to say that with a straight face.

This. Singh has given the Liberals the deadline and needed push to remove Trudeau and put forth a new leader for the general election in March 2025. And Trudeau will see this as his last opportunity to save face, act in the best interests of the LPC and step down.

I wonder what Trudeau will do when he retires? He’s no talk circuit darling like Obama or Clinton. Trudeau has no profession (lawyer, economist, doctor, etc.) to fall back upon, nor any significant skill set. Even his Rolodex of world leaders and elites is getting thin as a populist wave rolls across the world.

I would not be surprised to see Trudeau return to contest the LPC leadership and another election in the 2030s.

I doubt it. Even the Liberals wouldn't be that dumb.

With his net worth reported to be around $96Mn USD, he can probably chill for a while before looking at the classifieds. The speaker-for-hire circuit is pretty broad. The left/left of centre might not be enjoying much success lately but it doesn't mean they've gone away. It would actually be a good fit. He likes telling others how to live, apologizing, and all you have to do is say pretty things for money - just don't actually have to do any of them.

He will have no trouble finding work.. He's a Trudeau. I remember years ago i met Trudeau at a hotel bar i worked at. He was in town speaking at some climate change event, this was long before he entered politics. So even back then he was cashing in on his famous last name.

That last name has grown some tarnish. But he will get hired for something or other. And he has his bank account and pension. He’ll be fine.

Why do any of you think he ever even needs to THINK about working again after politics? If his net worth is indeed 96 million (US!), then that's serious F*** YOU money. With that wealth, HE NEVER HAS TO LIFT A FINGER OR WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING EVER AGAIN.

Hell, if I had even ONE MILLION in the bank, I'm pretty sure I'd never work again, at least not for anyone else. The booty shorts would never even come off at that point!

Singh’s net worth is that high. I think Justin has a paltry 10 million, or at least he did the last time I checked which was a while ago (before he and Sophie split).
