PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

IIRC, Singh's family are rich, aren't they? Like not suburban "I own a big McMansion" rich; he's got tens of millions in the bank. I doubt he cares about the pension. Its total future value is about 1% of what he already has.

Even if you have tens of millions in the bank, the pension has a present value of millions. It's still beer money that he'd probably want. That said, Singh will probably win his election. I don't think he's that worried. I think he's more worried for MPs who will get turfed.

Writing on the wall:

Conservatives decisively win B.C. federal byelection, dealing another blow to Trudeau

Cloverdale—Langley City byelection was won by Tamara Jansen, who held the seat from 2019 to 2021

The Conservatives comfortably won a federal byelection in the Cloverdale—Langley City riding, dealing yet another blow to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party.

Tamara Jansen, who held the seat from 2019 to 2021, won decisively over the Liberals' Madison Fleischer and the NDP's Vanessa Sharma, securing almost two-thirds of the vote.

The loss of the riding is another blow to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals, who are in turmoil after the Monday resignation of Chrystia Freeland from her role as finance minister and deputy prime minister.

Freeland stepped down just as she was to deliver a fall economic statement, prompting calls for Trudeau to resign.

The final results had Jansen securing 9,931 votes, compared to Fleischer's 2,401 votes, with 122 out of 122 polls reporting.

At this point Justin Trudeau needs to step down. The LPC needs to lick it's wounds, accept defeat and rebuild after the next election.
Honestly I could see him hanging on if no one else wants to go down Kim Campbell-style with the ship.

Perhaps for the Liberals, if they're looking at a wipeout regardless of Trudeau, it may be better if he stayed on to make the election more of a referendum on Trudeau, so that they can fresh afterwards without the association.

That's just it. Nobody wants to go down with the ship except those drinking the Kool-Aid.

Trudeau first and then DoFo, cancelling each with any luck.

I think DoFo was holding off because he thought the LPC would last till the Spring. I have heard on podcasts the PCPO was planning for Jan/Feb. This thing with Trudeau will definitely push him to pull the trigger as soon as he can in Jan. And he's going to win. We'll have a double conservative government for a few years.

You're probably right. Conservatives seem to wear scandals better .

I had never heard he's that rich. This article has a lot of detail, and he's clearly well off, but not an aristocrat/royalty like @richardwhite. It doesn't even mention going to any Leafs games!

The PCPO just pulled the trigger in the last few days on a big ad buy. The ads have been mostly together for awhile........but they're now out the door .....important to get those out before the money counts as an election expense....

Freeland has always had international opportunities available to her, so perhaps she sees this as as good as time as any...

I don't see why Carney would join the Liberals at this stage either... Its practically a submarine at this stage...
Another angle I hadn't considered, is Freeland running for leadership. I don't think she would have stayed on for any other reason (if she doesn't leave as I suggested above... with Carney shoed into finance?)...

... On the above, there has been fairly open friction between Finance and the PMO the last few weeks in particular. Stuff like this is often theatre to distract the media from something more important..........

In order to paint a difference and distance herself as much as possible, Trudeau could be shooting himself in the foot on purpose to give someone else a chance. However, the Liberal brand seems too tarnished regardless......and JT has a history with women in his party......
