I suspect a lot of Mark's friends who are supposedly willing to drop hundreds of millions on a new airport will re-evaluate their business case if HFR is announced at the same time.
Actually, we do not need both. Right now, Toronto and the GTA, Golden Horseshoe and southern Ontario have many airports that are not at capacity. If Pearson was blockaded, it would be horrible, but planes could fly into and out of Hamilton, Waterloo and London and they could take the brunt of the travelers. Because of the blockades, All rail between Eastern and Western Canada is grinding to a halt. To grind all air travel between Eastern and Western Canada, you would need to block at least 5+ airports.. Even then, you do have existing flights between smaller airports to other smaller airports that could allow that movement to still happen. For example, You can fly between Toronto and Winnipeg through Sudbury, Sault St Marie, and Thunder Bay. So, block Toronto and you just fly through the milk runs. Right now, that is not an option for CP, and up till this weekend, CN was going through Northern Quebec using ONR tracks to get to Montreal.
This is not about profitability of VIA. This is about the realities of our travel options and what has led us to this.
you need to keep the Hubris in check, to suggest that ALL the experts are wrong and you, someone with no commercial aviation background knows best Is a bit much.
if Pearson was blocked today there is not a single airport within 3 hours driving that has the tarmac space, gates or fuel farm to handle Pearson’s traffic. Not Hamilton, not Simcoe , not Waterloo or london, not even buffalo, no one. it would take all of the above combined times 2. And that assumes all GA and BA traffic at those airports are placed under an emergency stop order ( not happening by the way given the nature of many of those commercial flight operations ).
Ottawa, Mirabel and montreal Trudeau working together could do it, barely.
pearson is doing 1200 flights a day, 50 million passengers a year.
now image it’s 15 years from now and that traffic has gone up 60%, got the picture?
Wishful thinking, self serving misinformation and bad assumptions are not good enough to secure a prosperous environmentally friendly future for Canadas largest urban area.
Good day
I volunteered my time and expertise to develop the first fully privately funded proposal in 2011, a BA/GA Airpark , with the ability to self fund growth into a regional airport.. unfortunately it did not meet the political threshold requirements for timeline and capacity . The longer we wait, the higher the capacity shortfall, the steeper the ramp up, the greater the need for public funding to bridge the gap between organic self funded growth and estimated required capacity. You also talk in wishful thinking. If it is such a great idea, then it should be self funded.

lucky both the region and province is now on board, the Feds are out of excuses,
All the Feds have to do is get out of the way... let’s roll!
Toronto is the only city of its size with only one jet airport within its catchment area. In addition, Pearson handles 1in 3 of all Canadian air travelers. multiple reports have point to Pearson out of capacity by 2028. That is the baseline to opening pickering. It will take 10 years to build.Just a simple question: how many N American cities of Toronto's size have handy international back up airports to mop up all the air traffic when the principal airport is overrun by zombies/terrorists/protesters/reverse vampires and other common air traffic impediments?

New York, Chicago, Washington DC.
Toronto is the 4'th largest city in North America. Among the 5 largest North American cities, only Mexico City, LA and Toronto are served by a single international airport that in the top 40 NA airports by passenger traffic. Sooo, not exactly a knock on building a second airport in Toronto
*Cough *. Toronto stands alone, unquestionably vulnerable:
In Greater Los Angeles area there are five major airports:
LAX (Los Angeles International), the main International portal in California with major domestic travel as well. (One of the busiest airports in the world).
BUR (Bob Hope Airport aka Burbank Airport), a small (two terminals), domestic-traffic-only airport in the city of Burbank, Southwest Airlines has discount flights into BUR from many cities in the U.S. including Las Vegas, San Francisco and Oakland (adjacent to San Francisco).
LGB (Long Beach Airport), a small (one terminal), domestic-traffic-only airport in the southeast corner of the county of Los Angeles, to the south of downtown Los Angeles. JetBlue.com has discount flights into LGB from a number of cities in the U.S. including New York, Boston and Las Vegas.
SNA (John Wayne Airport aka Orange County aka Santa Ana Airport), largely, a domestic-traffic airport but with limited service to select cities in Mexico and Canada.
ONT (Ontario Airport ), a domestic-traffic airport but with very limited international service to 2 or 3 cities in Mexico.
There is also more than a dozen GA airports many with runways able to take a 737. But are handling business jet traffic and general aviation and helicopters.
Other airports such as San Diego, Palm Springs are considered well outside the LA area to be of help.
Mexico City stands as an example of what could happen to Toronto if we don’t get it together. They are once again trying to build a new airport ( attempt number 3, corruption killed the last one)
How far away from the city centre are those airports?
If we're including all those airports in the count for Los Angeles, Hamilton and Waterloo would count too. SNA is very similar to the Island/YTZ with its short runway.
seriously ? LA first pic, Toronto second, use the lat long lines for scale. Red dot shows Pickering , you can google the rest yourself. I am busy working.
