Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

There may be other reasons why ONR got their own track analyser. Maybe it’s necessary for the route to Moosonee, where some of the track is built on muskeg and especially prone to climate change.

Simply acquiring a used piece of technical equipment may just be an indication of nothing.

It's cheaper than building it themselves and they don't have to pay CP or CN to do it for them.

They replaced the platform benches at Gravenhurst station, it must be a sure thing that the Northlander is returning soon!
Is that station still open? They are going to need to bring the station washrooms and ticket areas to working condition. To avoid this they could use mobile trailers as ticket booths and waiting areas. That might be cheaper.

Do they even have enough rolling stock to run the train?

It's owned by the town. It has had a number of facilities in it over the years. I think a vet clinic is currently a tenant in part of it.

Replacing a couple of platform benches might be indicative of something monumental, or indicative that the benches needed replacing.

Funny that Bracebridge and Huntsville stations are not located downtown. Gravenhurst and Party Sound are right downtown. Hopefully this new train service will allow people to travel between those cities without having to drive. Too bad Barrie is not along the way since it is the largest urban city before Toronto.

Good point. It would not just be the route to Moosonee. I had an uncle who worked on portions of the Ferguson Highway (pre-cursor to Hwy 11 north of North Bay) and there were tales of equipment disappearing into the muskeg overnight. They might have determined that with a changing climate impacting on the roadbed, annual of bi-annual analysis wouldn't cut it and scheduling and paying for more frequency would likelybe prohibitive.

The original Bracebridge station is long since razed and the kiosk that served as the ONR stop is (was) one short block off the the main drag of Manitoba St. As far as I know, the kiosk is where the original station was, or darned close.

The 'urban area' of Hunstville is centred in a crook of the Muskoka River but the station is only a couple of blocks away. I guess the town was there before the rail went through.

I would argue the (former) Bracebridge ONR station is closer to its downtown than either of Via's Parry Sound stops, certainly the eastbound (CN) station.

What was the service demand when the train was running? Would it be more economically efficient to use some sort of DMU trainset (new or used) then go back to running massive old freight locomotives?

True, but the timing is a little fishy.

Why would they replace the benches? To serve the buses?

AFAIK no part of the interior can be used.

Do they even have enough rolling stock to run the train?
Short answer - maybe. They might have some old cars that could be refurbished sitting in Cochrane.

If it can meet NA crash standards, it could be an option.

The trains on the UP express and the FIRTS meet FRA standards. GO transit might be ordering some FLIRT cars so maybe there is a chance to tack onto that order.

The problem with DMU's is that they need more maintenance and if it's a fixed trainset then you cant swap out cars for maintenance. The whole train has to be taken out of service.
