OLG Toronto/GTA casino proposal (where to put it?)

Seems like a storm abrewing at OLG - Paul Godfrey was just fired





And the Toronto Star are reprorting that the rest of the board of directors are resigning in protest

The money that was supposed to come from OLG expansion was needed to balance the budget by 2017. Also ironically after all the stupidity about OLG execs getting fat paychecks Godfrey will end up with a fat severance.

I don't know how fat the severance will be. As chair he was paid about $150K a year which is a relatively small amount for someone of his caliber. He mentioned in the press conference that he gave his salary to charity (which I believe).

I watched most of Godfrey's press conference and it is obvious that he is not going away quietly. He strikes me as someone who believes in the adage "don't get mad get even" and as the head of a major newspaper he sure has the ability to "get even". It was really stupid for Wynne to pick a fight with someone as formidable as Godfrey - especially since by all accounts he did a good job a Chair of OLG.
 
Good riddance to bad rubbish, why should Toronto get a special deal? Is it because Ford says so?
 
Well, I suppose respect for the taxpayer got to start with the SkyDome. I wonder how much THAT deal ended up costing taxpayers.

And yes, that major newspaper which never even turned a profit during its' lifetime, and was the brainchild of a convicted criminal. Well done. One can only hope for such private sector discipline in the public sector.

A little disappointed that he's totally giving up on the idea of a casino in Toronto, was hoping that he would at least put some effort into pushing Woodbine (considering that it was a project he bragged about). But that's Ford for you.

Whatever he did with his salary, he was overpaid by $150K.

And what's so formidable about him -- turning a $150 million stadium into a $670 million monster of debt? Trying to push the sale of the Sun to American interests against the clear wishes of Sun employees because of the sweetheart deal he would have received? The lousy perm he had in the 80s?

What does any of this have to do with the OLG W? Who cares about Skydome or the Sun( I didn't know employees were supposed to a say in business deals). Whp cares? Right now he failed to the casino locked down and that should be the focus.

Actually Sun employees had a lot to do with killing that Houston deal. And Godfrey's (mis)adventures show that he has a habit of leaving behind big messes.

Well they shouldn't have. If it was a government deal they maybe as they are taxpayers but canadian business are snatched up and sold by americans all the time. Conrad Black was not canadian(anymore) lived in Chicago, Palm Beach and owned The Post.

And you accuse me of non sequiturs.

Government had nothing do with that deal being scuttled, though FYI the CRTC and Parliament have for years overseen foreign ownership of Canadian media and concentration of media ownership. If it were up to me I'd limit foreign ownership of Canadian media to zero.

That's not what I was saying. I was saying employes should not have a voice in who a company get sold to if they operate in the private sector. And there is no legitimate reason to limit foreign media ownership.

Do you actually believe that? A country this size sitting beside a country the size of our southern neighbour, without any foreign ownership controls in media, would simply not have any domestic viewpoint at all beyond, maybe, the CBC

(This will be my last post off topic)

As it is, CTV and Global put little effort into domestic television. Most of their Canadian content is filled by reproducing infomercials in Toronto and Vancouver Control rooms.

Well, for one thing "media" covers a lot more than TV....but I think you are a understating, a bit, the amount of production that goes on.
