Niagara Falls Hilton Phase II (53s, 172m, Stanford Downey Architects)

Niagara Falls City Council evidently has no qualms about approving anything.

I never thought I would live to see it, but they've managed to include an element even cheezier than gargoyles... statues on the roof. I wonder if they will be made of styrofoam as well?

Is The Harry involved in this one? Cause I could swear that's the the old Downtown Plaza design recycled in Niagara.

I just think that Niagara Falls is one place where crazy architecture would be completely acceptable, yet they decide to go with boring crap.

ya i dont think niagara falls has any big hight restrictions do they????????

I could be wrong but I thought I heard that they gave them the go ahead because they loved the architecture? Maybe I'm wrong, but it certainly is much higher than anything else. Maybe just the first developer to go that high I guess.

I think it is wrong to judge Niagara Falls, particularly that part of Niagara Falls, by "normal" urban standards.

The area is a fantasy land, an adult Wonderland....maybe even the closest thing we have to Las Vegas......garish works for over-the-top/fantasy-based vacationing. This design has nothing to do with urban sensibilities and everything to do with myth/dream selling.

Would it work at any corner in traditional urban setting....absolutely no. Will it work in Niagara Falls.....probably!

Can someone tell me exactly where this increased demand in hotel rooms is coming from? Isn't the tanking economy, new passport rules and the opening of casinos in Buffalo-Seneca killing the Canadian side?

Why would the Canadian side be getting killed? Of course those factors aren't advantageous, but the Canadian side is the main tourist side. It has a larger tourist area, and even if tackier, has more attractions, and is more invested in. That's the side people want to see. Ontarians and foreign tourists visit the city as well, and plenty of Americans aren't fazed by passport requirements. The hotel is probably being built knowing that Niagara Falls is a stable destination which will continue to draw more people in the future.

What's holding you back regarding the bad building label? It seems the next treat onsite is to be a 10 storey parking garage! Now this is city-building! Horrific!

well, yah.
but there's a part of me that cannot resist a building that's 58 storeys. no matter what it looks like.
height slut.
can't help it.
