Next Mayor of Toronto?

For people who preach inclusiveness and progressiveness, they sure like to hate on the right. For example, CBC and The Toronto Star (both blatently biased news sources leaning so far left I'm surprised they don't fall over, proof, just watch Christopher Humes reaction to Fords win) are ok while Sun TV News is evil just because they want to bring a view point from the other side.

Yes, the CBC and Star sooooo biased compared to the Sun and Post. I mean, the left media is jam packed with missing facts and ad hominem attacks...

Newsflash: Just because they don't suck the tit of your political ideology does not make them "ultra-left-socialist" media outlets. If anything, it makes them moderate and balanced. Read NOW or Eye if you want to see true left-leaning media at work.

I'm getting so tired of the same old crap from the left when it comes to Ford or anyone else (Harris, Harper etc) who is not a lefty. For people who preach inclusiveness and progressiveness, they sure like to hate on the right. To me, Fords win is indicative of the shift that the common person (the silent majority who is not an activist, artist, or elitest) has had enough and voted for change. In other words, the common person who actually works hard for a living in the private sector.

:D Well said.

Which I also don't comprehend. Taxes are generally lower in Toronto than other nearby cities. Compare a similar house south of Steeles to north of Steeles.

And in similar houses in other regions of Canada, taxes are generally lower than the house to the north of Steeles.

I pose this question to you: What level of taxation is appropriate?

I was amused by some of the comments in Now's don't-vote-for-Ford article.

---

Look, I already voted for Smitherman but can the staff of NOW please take a good hard look at what they print and, for the sake of those who lean-left in this city, raise the bar of this magazine? You guys are The Sun of the left.

I lean pretty hard left and yet everything written by this junk magazine makes me feel ashamed.

---

I dislike Ford and didn't vote for him, but a (very) tiny part of me wants him to win strictly so that I can enjoy watching Enzo's head explode tomorrow :)

Re. voting pattern...
Imagine a half doughnut shape; downtown folk voted in lockstep for smitherman/joeypants. (Well, probably mostly smitherman.), the peripheries, (etobbicoke, northyork, scarboro), voted largely for Ford.

Our turn to steer the Good Ship Toronto!

Obviously 47% of the city aren't bigots, and I'm surprised you would suggest that. However Ford is a bigot, as is many of his core supporters - this was evidenced in the reaction at his party to Smitherman.

Why any self-respecting person would vote for such a vile bigot is beyond my comprehension.

Though why anyone would vote for a such a pathological liar is beyond my comprehension.

"A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, irrationality, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs. The predominant usage in modern American English refers to persons hostile to those of differing race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, various mental disorders, or religion."

See above. Rob Ford is not a bigot. Your characterization of him as one is actually rather offensive.

yes I made a new account and you can delete the Lordmandeep account.

The reason I wanted to post again, is well there are few places on the internet to have a half decent discussion on Toronto issues. I may live in Brampton, but I come to the city every day.

Thing to note is Voter Turnout increased from 39% to 53%... Ford won by a projected 2-3 points to near 13% of the vote. It appears a lot of people who do not vote in muncipal elections, got up today and went out to vote for Ford. That clearly showed that people liked Ford.

Also fail to the people posting around pages 320-330, lol just because people downtown were not voting for Ford, does not mean others were not voting for him lol. It reminds of that Senate election is Massachusetts this year in Jan, the democrat was winning in Boston and people said the Republican had no chance. The Republican stormed the entire Suburbs and won easily...

Voter turnout seemed to be very high in the areas just outside downtown. It appears Ford was not only popular in the North East and West of the city but in many parts.

Also I wanted Ford to win, because I wanted to see just how stuck up the NDP'ers are in Toronto.

I am just sort of wondering how David Miller feels this morning.

With the Ford victory I don't feel that Toronto is so threatened unless (and this is a big unless) the excellent waterfront progress is impeded or halted. Now that would be a bummer. But I still frankly believe Ford can be cut down to size by council.

... A lifelong Torontonian, I can say with total honesty that most of the time I've despised the mayor. I'm feeling right at home today.

haha actually that sounds like an exact definition of rob ford

Re: ward percentages:

Ford started very high - exceeding 60% initially and gradually lost his lead. That was in the advance polls, which for various reasons would have been mostly suburban. As the larger, urban polls came in Smitherman + pants gained a bit of that back. A third of Ford's total votes came from the first 26% of polls - the advance ones - while less than a quarter of Smitherman's did.

I suspect Smithermans's support was fairly consistent across the city and the real swing was Pants vs Ford.

Oh yeah, those trash filled, vacant lots along the Don River are really bringing in the bucks and tourists.

I thought the Toronto Sun was bad, NOW magazine supports the like of Sandra Bussin and Paula Fletcher.

I really hate it when they say the left is progressive and yet the picked some of the most useless politicians to support.
