Did anyone hear on the news about that guy walking around downtown today stabbing random people? Where the hell are the police to catch this guy. He stabbed someone at Yonge and Adelaide and then another 2 at Queeen and Sherborne. Good to see the police on top of things down there.

Were the police to magically know where he would strike next?

I think it's time for a police state - and an army of pre-crime experts to stop such things.

Alas, nutbars like the random stabber can disappear in a crowd.

Caught!

Good news, they caught the guy. Considering the completely random and unprovoked nature of the crimes, I don't think we can really fault the police for not catching him immediately. I'm actually impressed they got him so quickly: video footage of him publicized the same evening, and an arrest the same night. Not bad. How quickly he'll be back out on the street stabbing people again is my bigger concern...

Homeless man charged in downtown stabbings

A homeless man faces a slew of charges after four people were stabbed in a bizarre sequence of unprovoked attacks in downtown Toronto Tuesday.

The attacks began shortly after 11 a.m., when a 40-year-old tourist was stabbed in the back of the neck outside a café on Adelaide St. E. His attacker fled, and the victim alerted police. The 40-year-old victim was taken to St. Michael’s hospital with minor stab wounds, police said. Fifteen minutes later, a man attacked and stabbed two women at a streetcar stop at Queen St. E. and Sherbourne St., police said. Each woman received treatment for her injuries.

A fourth victim came forward after initial media reports of the first attacks. He was in hospital Tuesday night with stab wounds to his hands. None of the injuries are life-threatening.

Police called the attacks "completely unprovoked," and held a news conference Tuesday evening to release photos of a suspect caught by a nearby security camera. Tips poured in, leading to an arrest Tuesday night. Police also recovered a small knife, which unfolded as part of a corkscrew.

Farid Marounisi, 24, of no fixed address, faces seven charges, including three counts of attempted murder, said Det. Sgt. Howie Page of 51 division. More charges could be added after police question the fourth victim. Marounisi is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

Four injured in downtown knifing attacks

Toronto police arrested and charged a 24-year-old man after a knife-wielding assailant attacked four strangers in separate late morning incidents downtown, east of Yonge Street, and then fled.

His targets included two women who were stabbed in the face. He didn't speak to the victims before or after he knifed them.

"None of the victims knew the attacker, this was completely unprovoked," said Detective Sergeant Neil Corrigan of 51 Division.

Two of the four injured people received stitches at St. Michael's Hospital and were released.

The attacks began around 11:25 a.m. when a 40-year-old visitor from out of town was standing outside a café near the intersection of Lombard and Victoria Streets, near Adelaide and Yonge.

"A male came up behind him, grabbed him by the neck and stabbed him three times in the back," Det. Sgt. Corrigan said.

As police responded to that call, a second one came in 10 minutes later from near Queen and Sherbourne Streets, about four blocks away.

There, two women had been stabbed in separate attacks by a man answering the same description as in the initial assault.

The first woman, aged about 40, was waiting to board the Queen streetcar when she was confronted and stabbed in the face.

Then the man ran south across Queen and tried to stab another woman, scratching her in the face, before running south down Sherbourne toward Richmond Street.

The woman later refused hospital treatment.

Then around 3 p.m., another man was approached, police said. He suffered stab wounds to his hands as he attempted to defend himself from the oncoming attack.

He remained in hospital last night, and police continued to investigate that incident.

A weapon was not clearly seen in any of the attacks, but the victims' wounds suggest it was a small-bladed knife.

Closed-circuit security video footage from the scene of the Lombard Street attack shows a male about 5 foot 6 and weighing 150 pounds.

"We want to apprehend this person as soon as possible."

Farid Marounisi, of no fixed address, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, possession of a dangerous weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.

Actually, probably not for a long time. As a homeless man, he's unlikely to be able to put up enough money for bail. He could languish in prison (though not necessarily so bad since the alternative is the street, just in time for winter) for months before his trial is complete.

reminds me of that robot on futurama that was always trying to stab people, no idea why.

Don't trust those homeless types, they somehow afford cellphones and new shoes...lol

And now we have a nut job released from Bedlam stabbing that woman yesterday. Turns out he'd already done the exact same thing a few years back, was deemed criminally not responsible, and then released after some "treatment". I hope they lock him away for good now, and that the woman sues the justice system for putting her attacker back on the street when he's obviously at risk of reoffending, i.e. killing someone.

The guy that stabbed that woman yesterday and the random stabber last year who is the subject of this thread don't appear to be the same person. Last year's guy was named Farid Marounisi while the guy from this year is named Samad Dabiri.
