Moving Giant Beer Tank to Toronto Complex Manoeuvre

A convoy shepherding six gigantic beer vats from Hamilton, Ont., to Toronto has completed its 11-day journey.

The vats are among about 40 vehicles that began their journey from Hamilton Harbour on Jan. 7, and were supposed to arrive at the Molson Coors brewery near Pearson airport Jan. 11.

But bitterly cold temperatures, snow and a tangle of overhead hydro wires slowed their progress. The convoy finally reached its destination early Monday.

The size of the six empty fermentation tanks - each 45 metres long, eight metres high and more than seven metres wide - posed unique logistical problems. Crews had to remove 250 traffic lights and 1,600 hydro wires along the route and reattach them after the convoy passed.

"We're very excited to have it finally be the day when the tanks are going to be here. We're going to be able to install them, and put them up and start brewing beer in the summer, invite the city of Toronto over for a pint of beer," said Cathy Noonan, a Molson Coors spokeswoman.

The convoy travelled only overnights between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., often travelling at walking speed. It remained parked along the side of the road during the day.

Crews now have to install the beer tanks, which can hold the equivalent of six million bottles of beer, a job that will take several months.

The purchase and transport of the vats, which were bought in Germany, will cost Molson Coors $24 million.
