The square looks amazing. One thing I hate about it though is the lack of trees! Its concrete land!! Lots of lost opportunities...

There are plenty of trees situated in the appropriate locations along with the Queen's Jubilee Garden. Being that's it's a public square, where would you put the extra trees without turning the site it into a forest? For me, at least, after standing right in the middle of the revised square, everything seems to fit in perfectly; it has a living room feel to it.

City takes Council Meeting Outdoors for Official Opening

The City is about to officially unveil a gem in downtown Mississauga. On Wednesday, June 22, Mayor McCallion and City Councillors will hold their Council Meeting outdoors on Mississauga Celebration Square. This may be the first time a City Council has ever conducted their meeting in the open air. But, that isn’t the only reason why this meeting is extra special: It will serve as the official opening of the City’s new state-of-the-art event destination – a vibrant public square with a year-round line-up of free, outdoor events and festivals, showcasing arts, cultural diversity and entertainment.

At the June 22 event, presentations will focus on how Mississauga Celebration Square became what it is today – How the concept of Placemaking was used to develop a design using the community’s input. Why this is an ideal location for a major event venue. Why two separate squares were turned into one large one. Those in attendance will enjoy these presentations on the features and plans for the Square in high-quality digital pictures and sound.

This versatile space is capable of accommodating up to 30,000 visitors. It has an expansive skating rink in the winter and interactive water fountain in the summer, an elegant glass pavilion, a trellised market area for vendors, forested and raised gardens, and a new relocated memorial monument.

The celebrations continue with a “Panera†boxed lunch which can be enjoyed at bistro tables under patio umbrellas on the upper square. The Tom Barlow Band performs in the redesigned, open-air amphitheatre and on-site performers will make this a lunch-time to remember.

Join in the official opening ceremony when the City brings its Council Meeting outdoors. Then, keep coming back, whether it’s for a show, to mingle at a festival, meet a friend, grab a bite or just relax. Experience it!

I still cannot understand the anti add / commercialism attitude many have.

Very disappointed in the new memorial structure as it looks like an after though, done cheap as well out of the way.

I, too, am a little disappointed with the memorial. The only thing I like in the new structure is that it has 21 lights, representing 21-gun salute. Other than that... bleh.

Yes, the raised gardens beside the library and beside the memorial will feature tables and chairs for coffee, tea, card game, etc.

There's way too much parkland in the area. On the district map legend, there are two more future parks planned. It looks like MCC is going for the "tower in the park" look after all.
