Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

How do you get your link to the photos, Anna?

I've found the link only to the TA page such as this:

http://gencat4.eloquent-systems.com...rolLoc=T&ControlPer=20&POI31_1878=-KEY_134163

When you select a photo on the Archives site and get the black frame with "Select image for purchase | View full window" - choose 'view full window', copy the URL of the photo (ending in .jpg), and insert it in the message with the
tags.

Then and Now for June 26, 2013.

Then. Granite Club House, Church Street [just north of Wellesley on the east side]. c1889. A whole series of Now and Then views for you today.

Who knew the 'Swells' of Toronto had so much fun here back in the day?

'Now' views taken in May 2013.

Yes, I know the pencil sketch 'Then' and my 'Now' photograph don't match up.. perhaps the artist of the time took some stylistic liberties. Or perhaps a later restoration modified the number of windows. And added a third floor.

Here is a later map of the area for you. The Clubhouse was later turned into a 'Garage'; and is identified as such in the lower left.

That would be Monteith Avenue. A handsome street.

Interesting... I was looking at those Harvey Naylor Kodachromes yesterday and was trying to figure out where this was.
It is looking across Church to Monteith, so the Loblaws was just north of the clubhouse.

HIGHLAND CREEK LIBRARY, 1955.

Looks more like a 1960 Buick, 'cause it ain't no auto built in '55!

The Toronto Archives keeps ever gaining the respect [mine at least, anyways] of researchers and followers of Toronto history by making such high resolution files available. That isn't the case in the instance of many other image archives, sadly.

Given the present tenor of the nabe, it seems weirdly poetic-clairvoyant that it was Loblaws in its late 60s "rainbow letter" phase. (And I think there was one more ugly logo change before they definitively Don Watted themselves in 1972.)

"I hadn't paid any attention to the car, but it also looks very much like my 1960 Chevy."
QUOTE: Prof Goldie.

'59 - '60 Chev had flat fins whereas the '59 - '60 Buick were canted. The only thing that I am

sure of is that it is:

1) It's a GM.
2) Circa '59/'60.

Kind regards,
J T
