Part 4 of my tour of the Town of Markham. Now we take a look at the old heart of Markham- Main Street (aka Markham Road, or Highway 48 ).
Unionville's Main Street looks like a small street worthy of a charming little village. Markham's Main Street is more like the street of your average Ontario town (which it was before becoming a suburb and a high-tech capital). It is less of a tourist trap than Unionville, with imposing brick buildings, pockets of strip malls and parking lots. The traffic here is many times heavier than Unionville, with the occasional TTC 102 Markham Road bus. Unfortunately the street sees few visitors on a weekday afternoon, so many of the stores and restaurants are closed. A good number of the retail units are vacant.

On the right: a T&T Bakery... probably not related to the Chinese big-box supermarket of the same name

Courtyard of Markham Village Lanes... a quiet shopping centre/office complex built around an urban square. Problem is all the units are vacant. Goes to show that good urban design doesn't guarantee "build it and they will come" in this part of town.
Love this building... it's a tall building compared to other buildings on the street, but it has a unique design and fits in quite well with the rest of the buildings on Main Street.
