LuminaTO, ManifesTO, ToronTO!
You have heard of LuminaTO this summer, now get ready for another major unique cultural festival; ManifesTO: 4 days. 8 events. Over 85 artists. One City.
In partnership with the city of Toronto’s Live with Culture and major sponsors like Telus and Puma the inaugural Manifesto Festival of Urban Music & Art was launched last night at the Berkeley Church. This was Luminato, yet created, driven and dedicated to Toronto’s youth.
It was a fantastic sight to see as hundred of youth kicking off the festivities with dozens of dance groups competing for a $2500 prize sponsored by Live with Culture. The breath and quality of dance talent in this city was evident. I was actually really proud of the city of Toronto for once, supporting a festival that brought together the best of urban, queer and various ethnic youth cultures together through music and art. It was just wicked to hear young people shouting out TORONTO! with passion when coached by the mc in between acts!
In my opinion this could become a unique major international youth festival attracting young people from around the world to Toronto in years to come. We are off to a great start with the city of Toronto and Canadian Heritage financially backing the event.
ManifesTO continues today at Alexandra Park with a block party from 1 to 9. The Main Event is tomorrow at Nathan Philips Square promising to “transform T.O’s civic heart into an urban music and arts playgroundâ€. Several official parties are taking at various clubs downtown throughout the weekend.
