Large-scale Philanthropy

Gary Hurvitz has made a 50M donation to Sick Kids to invest in mental healthcare and research.

Its the largest donation in of its type (to mental healthcare etc.) in Canadian history.

Toronto Star Article here: https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/20...e-largest-donation-of-its-kind-in-canada.html

A new interview that Garry Hurvitz did with Toronto Life on that donation:

Worth saying here, Mr. Hurvitz, of course, is still a very rich man, something on the order of 500M.........but with his 2 large donations in this field, he has donated about 15% of his net worth.

If Canada's richest family did the same, (The Thomsons), that would be ~7.5B

Some of Canada's rich are reasonably generous; but others are more than a tad stingy.

There's so much that could be done in research, in reduced tuition/scholarships/busaries, in the arts and conservation with bit more philanthropy.

I'm all for extracting that via the tax system instead; but it would be nice if people chose to give back a bit more voluntarily.

Edit to add: I was just looking at my post on the 1st page of this thread that mentioned the Thomsons.
Way back in 2018, the running estimate had their net worth at just over 30B; today that estimate has climbed to 50B, less than 4 years later. 😯

In general, I don't want to cross-posting something to three threads!

However, there is no better fit for this thread than the news that Peter Gilgan is donating 105M to Trillium Health towards the redevelopment of the Mississauga and Queensways campuses.

This is the largest ever donation to a hospital in Ontario.

The Gilgan name will go both sites, with Mississauga getting the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Queensway getting the Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre.

50M donation to Princess Margaret Hospital to fund cancer research:

Money coming from the foundation of Allan Slaight's widow, Emmanuelle Gattuso, as well as the former's foundation, managed by his son Gary.

Of particular note, the money is not 'designated'. Meaning PMH is free to allocate the money as it sees fit rather than it being narrowly prescribed to a particular cause or project.

U of T and Sinai Health announcing a new donation from the Tanenabaums............

20M to create the Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport.

Link: https://www.utoronto.ca/news/u-t-an...-judy-tanenbaum-establish-tanenbaum-institute

From the above:

The Tanenbaum Institute will yield new knowledge at the intersection of research and practice, translating discoveries into innovations that dramatically impact health and performance across all athlete populations.

The Tanenbaum Institute will bring together the leading sport science research of U of T’s Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, the sports medicine research expertise of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and the renowned clinical and research leadership of the Dovigi Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Clinic and the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Sinai Health.

50M donation to ROM from the Hennick Family Foundation is the largest in ROM's history:

From the above:

"The Hennicks’ contribution will support a multi-year revitalization plan to advance a vision to an even more welcoming and inspirational focal point of art, culture, nature – and community engagement with global impact."

Apparently part of a larger revitalization initiative for which the details will be forthcoming at a later date.

Not to boo-boo it too much, but I wish there is more support for acquisitions.

A record setting donation for healthcare in Scarborough announced this morning.

Orlando Corporation is donated 50M to Scarborough Health Network, with 25M to go to the capital fund for the new Birchmount Campus; a further 25M will go to establish a Centre of Excellence for Mental Healthcare at SHN.

The final 25M will go to U of T to support the new medical school at UTSC.

Orlando will get their name on the Emergency Ward at the Birchmount Campus and on the new Centre of Excellence for Mental Health.

Additional info from U of T's page on this donation:

"The Orlando Corporation Emergency Department will be part of SHN’s no-wait emergency department, placing a physician at the front of the house. This is a new face for Birchmount Hospital that will more than double the number of beds and ensure timely access to emergency care."
