Hi, what are the knife laws for Toronto?

Can I carry a knife in my pocket and walk down the street? What about in my backpack? Can I go on the subway?

It is an 8 inch (overall length) with 4 inch blade foldable knife.

I'm guessing that the laws regarding this are not specific to Toronto, but rather to Ontario or even Canada. Here is a 2004 article written by a lawyer discussing similar questions in the context of martial arts weapons. It seems that the law is not specific; whether something is a "weapon" or is "concealed" depends greatly on the context. http://ejmas.com/tin/2004tin/tinart_agnew_0104.html

I know for sure you can go on the subway with a backpack.....not sure about the knife though ;)

Curiosity....what are you carrying the knife for?

It's never crossed my mind not to put big long knifes in my backpack when I've been shopping for new kitchen knives down at Eatons downtown.

I have always thought that concealed weapon laws should be called "poorly concealed weapons" laws.....if i/you put a knife in a backpack for transport purposes....who would know? Unless, of course, I left the backapack half open and it became clear I was carrying a (poorly) concealed weapon......or, I guess, if I produced the weapon for some reason mid-trip!

In your pocket is illegal, clipped to the pocket is legal.

I carry a four-inch folder at all times, and have never had a problem with it (except the one time I went into Woodbine and forgot I had it on me. Security politely escorted me to the door and asked me to either check it or put it in my car).

There's basically 4 no-no's:
1) automatic opening mechanisms
2) knives that can be opened with one hand (excluding thumbposts and such)
3) butterfly-style knives
4) push-knives are considered to be a form of brass knuckle

As long as you're not brandishing it, but also not concealing it, you really shouldn't have any problems.

So in order to carry it I have to clip it to my pocket? What if my sweater is covering my pocket where the knife is clipped to?

When I was at art school there was a student who always had a large hunting (?) knife in a belt around his waist. He rarely smiled and didn't communicate much, but then he wasn't alone in having eccentricities given the nature of the institution. Being a foreign student ( German, I believe ) perhaps he thought bears or other wild animals roamed the streets of Toronto. Or maybe he was just nuts. The College administration apparently didn't see it as a problem, though it made some of the students nervous.

i saw some bears roaming the streets of toronto once. they were wearing leather and had real hairy chests.
