Let W-11 take you for a ride

A team of Karachi vehicle decorators have transformed a Melbourne tram to bring the experience of a journey on a W-11 Karachi mini-bus to the streets of Melbourne.

Let the Melbourne W-11 tram take you for a ride with its passionate displays of vibrant dancing colour in hand-cut sticker collage, sparkling reflection of sculpted stainless steel panels and dazzling flashing lights. The tram is complete with conductors from Karachi & Melbourne, the music that you would hear on the Karachi W-11, and a special edition of collectable tickets that feature popular Urdu poetry seen on the side of buses and trucks in Karachi.

In an increasingly homogenising and homogenised world, the W-11 is a claim for the human spirit to not be overlooked. A spirit of generosity and lust for life is transported by the W-11 as it temporarily encircles the city of Melbourne with its sides emblazoned in Urdu and English pyar zindagi hai / love is life, as if to radiate an aura of honour and goodwill outward and onward. The Karachi decorators have built a vehicle reminding us of our simple human capacity to move, and be moved.

Travellers in Karachi, Melbourne and anywhere between can read and contribute stories of how the ride on W-11 moves you by visiting a special interactive blog section of this website in the "passengers talk" section. Click your chosen ticket and lets go!

WHEN: every 50minutes, 10am to 9pm daily on the City Circle route, Wed 15 March to Sunday 26 March

Comments:

There must be some way to keep this tram on the tracks for ever. It's a special tram that speaks to everyone.

How I wish we could keep this tram! You can't help but get caught up in the happy, joyful music. A ride to work on this every morning would certainly bring a smile to your face. Let's find a way to keep it Melbourne...please!

It would be devasting to learn that this tram would no longer be in operation after the Festival, that all those intricately cut pieces of vinyl were peeled off and discarded, it can't be allowed to happen!! Taking a ride on the beautiful W11 warmed my heart and is the most amazing thing I've experienced in the Festival, and I think the best public art project I've ever come across. I don't want to see it disappear! and I'm certain I'm not the only one.

I agree that we should keep this beautiful tram.
Every part of Melbourne that has tram tracks (and those that don't) I am sure would love to have it as part of their cultural celebrations.
But why stop at one? Why not have a Calcutta tram, a Bombay tram or a Madras tram? - perhaps with regional food served - although it might be difficult to dance, talk and eat at the same time..

Whatever - we should keep this tram, because it is already an icon of Melbourne's unique harmonius multi-cultural community.

This is totally fabulous and has put a smile on everyone's face! Will it be extended past March 26 - everyone wants it to be. Please let me know.
Why not make it a City Circle feature for the whole of 2006??

You must not let this tram leave the tracks of Melbourne. It is wonderful to look at, to travel in, and to feel its excitement during the journey. It also sends a message that multiculturalism is alive and well.

What a ride! It was the highlight of a long and exhausting day in the city. I think it should stay in service indefinatly - heck get another one! Make all the circle trams cultural - Italian, Greek, African etc.

and best of all, here's a video of it!

:lol absolute mayhem!

That's fantastic!

Hint hint TTC.
Less coroprate wraps, more of these.

Cultural streetcars... sounds like a good idea. It has been a while since Toronto had those moose all over town. This seems like a good replacement.

My first impression was that it's kind of tacky...but I do like the general idea.

It is tacky, but so is the real thing that it's paying homage to.

This was part of the cultural program for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

It would be fantastic if Toronto did an art program with our streetcars.

Better yet, let school kids design a paint scheme then do it up with a vinyl wrap. That would be cool.

I HATE wraps, especially with advertising, because I hate being a passenger in these buses or streetcars and having an obstructed view.

That is also one reason why I can't like any low-floor bus - particularly any Orion product they get so much dirtier than any older high-floor bus (even the New Flyer D40LFs aren't as dirty) in the winter - they have obique windows.
