Howard Street and Glen Road

There is an interesting article on building abandonment in Toronto at:

http://individual.utoronto.ca/property/AI_report.pdf

There's stuff in there on Howard St./Glen Rd., though it covers other areas.

I live very close to Howard & Rose, and I'm intrigued by poor old 76 Howard sitting there all alone now. There is a beautiful series of photos of the area taken in 1913 by Arthur S. Goss, available at the Toronto Archives site:

Search for "Glen Road" or "Howard". If I had more time I'd bring some over, but there are others here who make that their mission, so I'll leave that to them. I will, however, attach two images from the Goad's 1884 fire insurance plan. Clearly, the houses on the west side of Glen, and on the south side of Howard between Ontario and Bleeker, predate the 1884 plan.

Great article. I wonder why the author didn't do a little more research and identify the current owner(s) -- including the names of corporate officers and directors -- who have allowed these properties to deteriorate.

A little public shaming might be in order here, especially given the suggestion that the owner's actions are contributing to crime in the area.

Let's face it. These houses are doomed in just about any scenario and probably would of been torn down and long forgotten in the majority of those possibilities.

I agree they should have identified the current owners. Since greed is innate in some people it may not make a difference to publicly shame them but it wouldn't hurt to give them a little grief for all the grief they caused .

From a Toronto Star article the owners are listed as follows
http://www.thestar.com/article/271420

10 Glen Rd.
Owned by: Bleeman Holdings Ltd., Grossman Holdings Ltd., J. Silver Holdings Ltd., Rose Park Howard Investments Ltd., Rose Park Wellesley Investments Ltd.
The story: This block of row houses is boarded up and uninhabited, as are the three neighbouring addresses.

12 Glen Rd.
Owned by: A numbered corporation listed as 742686 Ontario Ltd.

14 Glen Rd.
Owned by: Bleeman Holdings Ltd., Grossman Holdings Ltd., J. Silver Holdings Ltd., Rose Park Howard Investments Ltd., Rose Park Wellesley Investments Ltd.

Glen Rd
.
Owned by: Rose Park Howard Investments Ltd., Rose Park Wellesley Investments Ltd.

This street has great potential to be a cozy, little, intimate pocket of cafes and restaurants like Baldwin street west of McCaul. It would do wonders for the neighbourhood, provide a much needed alternative to the soul-sucking blight of St. Jamestown, create another postcard destination for our city, and restore a beautiful set of Victorians to their original splendour.

...and maybe even be a perfect strip for the Buffys and Gossip Girls to lounge in, given its Sherbourne Subway/Glen Rd Bridge connectiveness...

thank you Mustapha! interesting that you should publish these now--as the city is finally moving ahead on completing the long delayed planning report for the area bounded by Bloor Street East, Howard Street, Sherbourne Street and Parliament Street. next meeting is this coming Tuesday Apr 27.
