Home Invasion At Waterfront Condominium... this just in.

I've reopened this thread. THX don't highjack threads as you did with this one. We know you have a vested interest in City Place but there's no room for this at UT. Let's have a proper discussion. Otherwise the thread will be deleted.

Actually, because this *was* a a big media-spin news story today (for better or worse), I don't find it necessarily that far out of line...

the "buzz-in" concierge is far from secure. I was in a building a few years ago where people easily posed as residents or as accompanying residents to enter the building right under the nose of the bored underpaid minimum-wage night concierge.

Sorry about the post invasion Ed. i thought a record of up to the minute coverage would be beneficial for UT and I must have missed your comment before I posted the last one.

Anyway, I don't live at 3Navy Wharf. Around 6pm today, while police cars were parked outside, I was able to walk right in and roam around the 6th, 5th and 7th floors. Same floors the incidents took place. It was that easy.

At Optima 81 navy, residents have to card the elevator to access their specific floors. Then recard again on their floor to access either north or South side. Only the 5 residents on each side of the building, on that floor have access.

HVE was not built with the same stellar security standards as Optima. Although, HVE has better standards than most other condos.

What security is in place at HVE? Surely they have video cameras and a security guard watching monitors. I'm surprised that this would happen in a new building. That would put a damper on sales across the street.

I live in that building on the 5th floor.
Security is NOT good. The concierge is never at the front desk, and people go in and out all the time behind residents with their entrance keys.
I left the building at 10am, via the fire exit. There were no cops around to ask me any questions, or to even see that someone was leaving from the side fire exit. I know that 10am was a few hours after the incident, but still within enough time to be checking ALL exit points from the building. I was home all the time this happened until 10, but noone came knocking at my door. So, the investigation couldnt have been that extensive.
My thoughts - drug/gang/loan shark related. Obviously the people in that unit were targeted. 5 people living in 1 unit at HVE is a bit excessive. Plus, they were "attacked" when coming home at 4:30 in the morning. The few details dont add up to some random event, victimizing innocent people.

Maybe someone on this board can answer my question on this topic? If the victims decided to sue the security company and also the Condo Corporation for faulty security, could the condo corporation actually be liable for damages? Would the residents have to pay for this in condo fees?

1. Don't put forward these ideas.

2. Obviously the "victims" had a connections to the loan sharks/dealers etc. Why else would they wait for their arrival? So i wonder how far this would go in court.

3. Although this would be bad for the building, a cost like that divided by 2000 owners won't be too bad.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the Star or Globe and Mail about this. Home invasions apparently are becomng pretty routine. The police put out a news release indicating that there are three suspects, not yet caught.

My brother and sister-in-law live in Optima - the individual floor security is unlike anything I've ever seen.

Home invasions apparently are becomng pretty routine.

Last night's news mentioned that highrise invasions have doubled since 2002 from 3,000 to 6,000 per year.

Hold on - there were 6,000 home invasions in condos and apartments in Toronto last year?! That can't be accurate. Where was this reported?

I think the media is now using the term "home invasion" as a euphamism for what used to be known as "break and enter"

I always thought "home invasion" meant the occupants were at home when the robbery took place, and the robbers knew that when they entered.

I agree though that the media uses the buzzwords "home invasion" because it makes the story stickier and keeps your attention longer than "robbery"..it sounds so much more dramatic..and of course a real home invasion, such as this crazy waterfront story, IS so much more sensationalistic for the media. I find sometimes they are using "home invasion" for regular robberies too.

Is there video cameras recording the various entrances and exits? I wonder why they have office building like security at Optima and only limited security at HVE.
