A police investigation is underway at a condominium near the Rogers Centre after reports of a violent home invasion.
Paramedics brought out an unconscious person who was found on the seventh floor of the waterfront building on Navy Wharf Ct., and that individual has been taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, investigators have re-established a perimeter in the area near Bremner Blvd. and Spadina Ave., after taking it down about an hour earlier, as they continue their probe into what happened.

Few details are available at this point, but reports suggest as many as five armed attackers forced their way into a unit and bound and gagged the people inside. The victims may have been trapped outside on their balcony at one point.

At about 4:30am there was a call to 911 and officers from 52 Division and the emergency task force rushed to the area.

Three people were seen leaving the building in police custody at one point, with handcuffs on. It's unclear though whether they're considered suspects or if they were victims in the attack and officers were just being cautious.

Investigators are reportedly still searching the building for suspects, and there's no word on any charges.

The condition of the individual taken to hospital isn't known and no other injuries have been reported.

Anyone with information is asked to call 52 Division at 416-808-5200.

Police search downtown condo after home invasion

Toronto police are investigating a home invasion at a condo building near the Rogers Centre Monday morning.

At 4:50 a.m., police were called to the building on Navy Wharf Court in the Spadina Avenue and Bremner Road area when a man on the fifth floor heard screams from the unit above him.

When police arrived, they found the occupants of the sixth floor unit tied up. Police said a group of masked, armed men broke into the residence.

Six men were led out of the building in handcuffs and brought to 52 Division. Police wouldn't confirm if they were suspects.

The investigation appeared to have wrapped up around 7 a.m. after police brought the men to the station, but about 15 minutes later at least 10 heavily armed members of the emergency task force returned to the scene.

Police said they are still looking for suspects inside the building. They are also talking to people in nearby condominium buildings, a number of which are linked underground.

Most likely drugs or some other such activity. How much else is there to steal in a cramped City Place condo? And five guys? They must have tripped over eachother.

Toronto police are searching for several suspects after a violent home invasion at a downtown condo building near the Rogers Centre early Monday morning.

At 4:50 a.m., police were called to the building on Navy Wharf Court in the Spadina Avenue and Bremner Boulevard area when a man on the fifth floor heard screams from the unit above him.

When police arrived, they found the five occupants of the sixth floor unit tied up and gagged.
Det. Leslie Dunkley said the masked gunmen breached security and were waiting for the victims in the hallway, then forced them into their apartment.

Though the suspects were wearing masks, police said, two of the men were described as Asian by one of the victims.

Police said they had a number of people considered persons of interest in custody at 52 Division, but no charges had been laid.

The investigation appeared to have wrapped up around 7 a.m. after police brought a group of men to the station, but about 15 minutes later at least 10 heavily armed members of the emergency task force returned to the scene.

Officers re-entered the building to search for suspects, and also spoke to people in nearby condominium buildings, a number of which are linked underground.

Residents were questioned as they left the cordoned off area surrounding the building.

Police probe downtown home invasion

STAFF REPORTER

Police continue to question six people following a downtown home invasion, but aren't sure if the people they have in custody are attackers or victims.
The crime occurred early Monday morning at a condominium building in the Spadina Ave. and Bremner Rd. area, just steps away from the Rogers Centre.

Six people were taken to 52 Division in handcuffs at approximately 6:30 a.m., but police have yet to identify them as suspects, said Const. Michael Mace.

"At this point, there is still an investigation surrounding what part these people actually had in the home invasion," said Mace. "It has not yet been decided whether they're victims or suspects."

Officers responded at 4:30 a.m. after a resident of the condo on Navy Wharf Ct. called police to report that a neighbour's apartment was being burglarized.

Police surrounded the area with weapons drawn. Emergency Task Force officers searched the building because they believed the suspects were still inside the apartment with the victims.

The area remains closed for an ongoing investigation, which briefly shut down the off-ramp to Spadina Ave. from the eastbound Gardiner Expressway during the morning rush.

Officers are currently extending the search area from the original apartment.

"They're not satisfied with what they've found at this time, and believe suspects have left the building. So they are planning to search more than the single apartment that was invaded," said Mace.

One victim was found unconscious on the building's 7th floor and taken to hospital shortly after 8 a.m. The name, age and gender of the victim, who had been tied up, has not yet been released.

Home Invasion At Waterfront Condominium
Monday July 31, 2006
Not even the tight security at a downtown condominium was enough to keep a group of armed bandits from terrorizing residents and ripping apart their home Monday morning.

Police and armed ETF officers were called to a sixth floor unit in the building on Navy Wharf Ct., near the Rogers Centre, after receiving a 911 call reporting a violent home invasion at about 4:30am.

The half dozen frightened residents were reportedly tied up and pistol-whipped by as many as six attackers. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt in the incident.

The suspects did steal some items from the home.

Police quickly set up a perimeter in the area near Bremner Blvd. and Spadina Ave., and combed the building for the thieves. Anyone leaving the building with police did so in handcuffs, so that investigators could sort out victims from suspects later on.

Other people living in the complex couldn't believe what had happened, saying a special key is required in order to get in.
"Very secure, very secure," said resident Simon Gorka. "Yeah. This is the first time I've ever heard of anything like this happening."

Police contend the attackers were waiting in the hallway for the residents.

Officers apparently don't have anyone in custody currently and they can't confirm any link between the victims and the suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to call 52 Division at 416-808-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Police investigate downtown condo home invasion

CTV.ca News Staff

Six people were taken into custody for questioning after heavily armed police officers surrounded a downtown condominium in response to a home invasion.

Emergency Task Forces officers were called to the building in the Bremner Boulevard and Spadina Avenue area, just steps from the Rogers Centre, at about 4:30 a.m. Monday.

Several residents were ambushed on the sixth floor by as many as five people wearing masks and brandishing guns. Police said some of the victims were also pistol-whipped.

"The suspects were already in the building and the victims came in afterwards," one police spokesman told reporters.

Some media reports said a victim was found unconscious on the building's seventh floor and taken to hospital shortly after 8 a.m.

Nearby roads were closed to traffic for a short time as police investigated.

The six people detained at about 6:30 a.m. were taken to 52 Division. Police were not clear if they were victims or suspects.

The motive of the bandits was not clear, police said.

The incident caused concern for residents of the new waterfront condo on Navy Wharf Court.

"It doesn't feel good. It's a bit stressful because with all these new buildings, you'd expect that the security is better," said one resident.

"I'm eager to know, to figure out exactly what happened."

Just curious... why are you so interested in this piece of news, thx?

I don't really see much significance in this news. Condo living appears to be safer than, say, single family housing, where random attacks and home invasions are more likely.

The rumour is that the invadors knew the residenets. I'm so inerested in it since i live there and i own property there.

Heavily armed Toronto Police arrested a group of young men after several residents of a highrise condo hear the Rogers Centre were ambushed and pistol-whipped just before dawn today.

Described by investigators as a home invasion, the robbery on at least one floor of the Old Navy Wharf building was apparently foiled when at least one tied-up victim got free and fled.

At least five men were taken away in handcuffs around 4:30 a.m. The victims were taken to 52 Division for interviews and declined to talk with a reporter.

Police have not released details about victim injuries or charges faced by any of the suspects.

Wow. 7 media updates. I haven't seen so many articles posted to one thread by one person since two-bit papers, like the Red Deer News and the Kelowna Times, were cited to annoyingly back someone's pro-Conservative views.

Meh, isolated incident. It's pretty hard to invade a condo, when there's a buzz-in or concierge, unless there's something really fishy.
