Harper promises to...

Re: Harper promises to cut GST

I think it is great. It makes small purchases for poor people who would not be affected my inome tax cuts, able to purchase cheaper. It gives middle class and wealthy more buying power making shops better off creating jobs.

INcome tax cut to people who are already tax exempt??

I think Harper could have a winner here.... I certainly hope so anyway.

Re: Harper promises to cut GST

Canadians are too afraid of his party's social conservative agenda.

Afraid? Maybe they just don't want a socially conservative agenda, or are not interested in it, or take the view that individuals can actually make choices for themselves and don't have to have a government legislate their choices away.

spasongs,
a number of economists have argued that excessive tax cuts will put too much money into the economy and generate inflation. If inflation goes up, so will interest rates making the cost of borrowing go up. If a large enough tax cut comes into play, one that forces the government to go into deficit, the government will have to borrow money at a higher interest rate since interest rates will have to go up in order to hold back inflation due to excess spending.

The GST taxes goods for consuption, including imports. Manufacturing jobs here may have been lost to off shore manufacturers, but those goods can still generate revenue through the GST when they show up here. Not bad, huh?

I'm not sure what you mean, but you can't cut taxes to those who are tax exempt. It is a meaningless statement.

What would a poor person who didn't even make enough to make more than the personal exemption be buying that we should reward them for? Food, rent, and medical care doesn't have GST on it. Poor people, Harper loves you so much you can waste your money on excess eventhough you can barely make ends meet??? How does a GST reduction increase your buying power any more than an income tax cut? If you pay less income tax you can afford more... including more investments which makes you even more money which you will be taxed less on, so you can make more money, etc. GST cuts will not allow you to invest more and improve your cash flow. If you are in debt now and want to pay off debt then income tax cuts will help you do that... GST tax cuts will not, unless you are counting pennies for a long time. GST tax cuts hurt the country. It would be better to cut the same amount off income tax rather than reduce the GST.

This GST tax cut is a bright light on the Conservative campaign trail that is created with fire. Hopefully the population of Canada doesn't turn into a bunch of moths.

Re: Harper promises to cut GST

Seems like any tax cuts invariably hurt poor people. For some, even a complete removal of all taxes would make them only marginally better off than they are now while obliterating the budget for services they often depend on disproportionately.

For wealthy people, it's not like a 2% GST slashing will cause them to rush out and buy a second Jaguar. Is the average family so desperate for a $400 reduction in expenses that they're OK with the government not having another $8-9 billion to work with? It may only noticeably boost consumption if the tax cut is in the form of a rebate/cheque so that people treat it as found money and spend it accordingly.

Nice one. Note that the Liberals and Tories are fighting the electon on the tax cut issue - except it's sales tax cuts vs. income tax cuts. I'm more and more satisfied in supporting a party that isn't promising tax cuts.

Re: Harper promises to reduce wait times for healthcare

today he promises to reduce wait times for healthcare....

Harper sets health wait-time targets
Dec. 2, 2005. 10:49 AM
CANADIAN PRESS

WINNIPEG — Conservative Leader Stephen Harper says a Tory government would work with the provinces to reduce waiting times for medical treatment.

But Harper, who was accused during the last election of having a private agenda that favoured private health care, says this doesn’t threaten public medicare.

“There will be no private, parallel system,†he said.

Harper says he wants to guarantee that cancer patients start radiation treatments within 10 working days of seeing a cancer specialist.

Non-urgent hip and knee replacements should be done with 10 months.

These are targets originally set by a group of medical organizations, including the Canadian Medical Association.

“We will reduce waiting times; we will hold (provincial) governments accountable.â€

He said if patients can’t get speedy treatment in their own provinces, they should have the option of going to another.

Harper said he wants to reform and improve medicare.

“We are going to do what it takes to protect the public health-care system,†he said.

He also promised to work with the provinces to help universities turn out more doctors and nurses.

All I've heard are soundbites. Just how to get from X to Y remains muted. Kinda like Paul Martin, actually. Again, a lack of vision.

Re: Harper promises to reduce wait times for healthcare

yup.

the main focus on this election will be gay marriage again. a topic that already has be dealt with will be resurrected again to cloud the atmosphere and fill debate time.

instead of moving on to infrastructure issues, healthcare, etc, they're still bickering with human rights issues which should have be solved a long time ago.

harper: "don't worry about any issues because we gotta stop gays from getting married".

martin: "we gotta stop harper because he doesn't care about human rights".

the issue is done. why don't they ever move on?

Re: Harper promises to reduce wait times for healthcare

notice he didn't say "will be no private/public parallel system".

Re: Harper promises to reduce wait times for healthcare

The trouble with all the federal parties is that they've missed the part about wait times being an issue managed by the provinces.

Re: Harper promises to reduce wait times for healthcare

So much for the hidden agenda. I was hoping he'd actually propose an end to the government health care monopoly that's along the lines of something that's actually fairly common in all other civilized countries ie. two parallel health care systems.

The first time around it wasn't really dealt with. The fact it wasn't a free vote shows that the Liberals felt that the bill would fail. If it was such a 'for sure' issue the first time around than why would Martin not just have a free vote.

Re: Harper promises to reduce wait times for healthcare

it's not always wise to leave human rights issues up to the public vote. it is human nature for most people not to give a shit about issues that don't effect them - meaning they don't care about other peoples rights, they only care about themselves.

Re: Harper promises to repeal the law of gravity

This just in... as part of the Reform Party's plan to capture votes through mergers and acquisitions the Reform Party (aka Conservative Reform Alliance Party aka CRAP aka Alliance aka Conservatives) have just acquired the remenants of the Rhino Party. New campaign promises include:

- repealing the law of gravity
- reducing the speed of light because it's much too fast
- providing higher education by building taller schools
- legalising pot... and pans, and spatulas, and other kitchen utensils
- repeal the gay marriage law
- abolishing the environment because it's too hard to keep clean and it takes up so much space

Oops... repealing the gay marriage law was a Reform policy... it is hard to separate the Rhino ideas from the Reform ones when they are put in a single column.

Re: Harper promises to repeal the law of gravity

Too bad we can't recycle refuse the same way political parties recycle promises.

I'm getting cynical, and right around Christmas, too. Santa will not be pleased.
