Wow! For me this has always been one of those annoying stops on the VIA train to Montreal - I had no idea it was this urban and pleasant!

One of the nicest towns in Ontario, where they recognized the value of the heritage buildings long ago.

What has saved this town is that it is outside the normal commuting distance from Toronto (sorry if that sounds cynical). It has grown somewhat but not at an uncontrollable rate.

Really nice post.

Like many small Ontario towns, the nice, well-kept streetscape and building fronts make the difference. Too bad some areas of Toronto could not emulate these qualities.

well, to be fair, a small town like cobourg has only one main street and a small main waterfront area. division st is the only other significant commercial street downtown and it's not nearly as "well-kept" as king st.

Cobourg is nice.

Some comments though. Cobourg may be outside the official commuter distance for Toronto. But there are people who do commute each day. I know of some people that do commute to Toronto each day but live in Cobourg.

Also about the won knowing how to keep itself. Yes the town keeps the downtown nice. However there is a whole other side to Cobourg, that is subdivisions, malls, and big box stores.
The town has been able to maintain a healthy town centre (probably do to Tourism). But it is far from immune to regular sprawl.
The majority of Cobourg residents live in 905 style subdivisions surrounded by big box stores.

But the historical part is kept nice.

Downtown Cobourg has more architectural oomph than downtown Kitchener, a city 20X its size.

Victoria hall is just incredible. Can you imagine a town of 10,000 people today saying "you know what? Let's build that Gehry we always wanted"?
