GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

My 25 cent bet is something featuring the Tier 4 locomotive - Premier's involvement fits with the carbon theme, and they haven't played it up much.

Strangely, the Barrie line weekend train service from June 25-Sept 5 is not listed on that page but it is indeed reinstated this summer, per the schedule finder set to weekends in that date range. Same service as last summer, 4 southbound+4 northbound trains serving all stops, seems like the same times I remember from last year. Hopefully it's permanent--seems a logical step towards the rumored ~April 2017 hourly AD2W.

Maybe the announcement is "bigger" than usual given the Premier is attending.

Knowing that Wynne and Del Duca will be attending, I've pre-written 90% of tomorrow's press release. Fill in the blanks.

Improvements to ________ Will Boost Economy and Improve Quality of Life
June 14, 2016

Ontario is investing $___ million to give commuters more transit options and reduce congestion.

Premier Kathleen Wynne was in Toronto today to make the announcement. “Investing in transit strengthens our communities. This is part of our government’s commitment to provide modern, accessible transit infrastructure that will reduce commute times, grow the economy and improve people’s daily lives.”

[Insert one sentence describing the actual announcement].

Ontario is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province's history -- about $160 billion over 12 years. This is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals. In 2015, the province announced support for more than 325 projects that will keep people and goods moving, connect communities and improve quality of life.

Expanding transit options is part of the government's economic plan to build Ontario up and deliver on its number-one priority to grow the economy and create jobs. The four-part plan includes investing in talent and skills, including helping more people get and create the jobs of the future by expanding access to high-quality college and university education. The plan is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history and investing in a low-carbon economy driven by innovative, high-growth, export-oriented businesses. The plan is also helping working Ontarians achieve a more secure retirement.

QUICK FACTS
  • Since 2003, Ontario has extended GO’s rail network by nearly 90 kilometres, opened 14 new GO stations, rebuilt four existing stations and added more than 31,000 new parking spots across the system.
  • A recent report by the Broadbent Institute and the Centre for Spatial Economics found that, on average, investing a dollar in public infrastructure in Canada raises GDP by $1.43 in the short term and up to $3.83 in the long term.
  • The province’s Moving Ontario Forward plan is supporting public transit, transportation and priority infrastructure projects by investing $31.5 billion. About $16 billion of this will be invested in priority rapid transit projects in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

You can put in the last part of that missing sentence:

"............ to begin construction in 2023"

Guess we'll see if the actual announcement in Kitchener is more than one sentence and if timelines are provided.

The schedule isn't great for heading northbound to spend a day in Barrie, or for getting a ride from a friend or family member, say, to Wasaga Beach or Muskoka. Still, the first train arrives at Allandale just before 2PM. It'd be great if a train got in from Toronto before 12PM.

Fixed that for ya.

570 News Kitchener is reporting on Twitter that two more peak trains a day, each way, between Union Station and Kitchener will commence in September, and that CN will be building a new freight line to "free up lines for GO train service in Kitchener"

Whether this means a new rail corridor, or just additional track, we don't know yet. Might be interesting.

I expected the Kitchener extra trains, but the CN news tidbit is an intriguing add-on. One wonders if it's a regular "Metrolinx funding an additional track in CN corridor" being spun into a CN positive as if they're doing something noble -- but regardless, more tracks, and efficient juggling of which trains use which corridor -- moving towards all-day Brampton and Kitchener GO train service.

Extra track through Brampton? I hope?
