GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Strange that they didn't integrate that page into the GO TRIP project navigation on their website. They really need to rethink their project pages and merge GO TRIP with the EAs and other projects.

Mysterious unfinished tracks

I've a question. Perhaps the GO-knowledgeable here can answer it. :)

Along the Lakeshore East line between the Don River and east of Danforth station, there are several locations where branch tracks split off at switches, but appear completely unfinished as if abandoned in mid-construction.

The tracks leading onto the Don yard end this way on the bridge over the river. A little further along, near Eastern Avenue, there's a switch which leads to a section of unfinished, unballasted track that's been there for so long that grass is growing up around the ties. East of Danforth, near the Victoria Park underpass, there's another such switch and track.

These tracks are simply laying out in the open on the ground, as if they were dropped there. What's going on? Is the track near Eastern Avenue going to be connected to the one leading out of the Don yard? Where is the track near Victoria Park going?

The switch east of Victoria Park and the accompanying track is part of the new construction and was planned as an engineering track....somewhere to tuck away MOW equipment when necessary.

The track you mentioned over Eastern Ave. I believe may be upgraded in the future and could act as a westbound entrance to the Don Yard for GO operations.

Cool. Thanks!

I went out to Oakville today to get a look at the third track on the Lakeshore West.

The new track is continuous from the bridge over Mississauga Road to west of Clarkson station, but most of this length has not been ballasted. Construction of the new platforms continues at Clarkson station. I was unable to see how much further the new track went, because of a freight sitting on the middle track from Ford Drive all the way over through the Ford yard to the level crossing west of it. (The GO train I was on was on the south-most track at Port Credit and Clarkson, even going westbound). At Oakville, the trackbed seems to be present, but the third track has not yet been laid. It looks like the new platform edge and the new access to what will become an island platform is mostly done at Oakville. I wonder how much longer this will take?

Stupid question but could someone explain what ballasting the track means?

Ballast is weight so I'm assuming that there is some sort of weight applied or attached to the tracks to keep them from moving/rising up. Am I right?

ballast is the rocks that fill the space around the ties. it is also underneath the ties.

It stop just west of Ford drive. The new track #1 will be shifted south to line up with the current track #1 The current track #1 will be shifted south to line up with current track #2.

The current track #2 will shift south to line up with the new #3 track on the west side of Ford Dr. This #3 track will connect to the industrial track that has been upgraded to Mainline.

East of Royal Windsor Dr. the 3 lines will shift to the south to connect to the new 3 mainline tracks being install at this time.

The roadbed is complete at Oakville station and waiting for ties to be lay that are sitting east of the station. Now that the Dufferin Jog track work has been moved, crews should be back out to Oakville either this month or Feb to starting laying the ties and rail.

At some point, moving the 3 mainlines south of where they are at the west end of the yard will have to take place with new switches being install. A 4th track is supposed to be install on the north side of these mainlines as a drill track for the yard, but will stop short of the station.

Once the new #1 track is install for the station, the north side of the existing/old platform will have new platform edge install and complete the upgrade to the platform.

I don't expect to see GO service on this new #1 track until the spring as the ballast and track work have to settle first into the roadbed. Train will be running under slow order on day one.

Do you mean that they have indeed shifted the tracks on the Weston sub at Dufferin?

Yes they have and a lot sooner.

The support framing was almost installed on the north side today.

The bridges south ends are now being support of the support frames.

Crews were working on one of CP bridges in stripping it at top level.

All the existing rails and ties are gone for the tracks..

Looks like the existing support wall will come down next month after the excavation starts where the new bridge stop.

Will post some photo's I shot today in the next day or so.

Photo's from my Jan 11 visit.

End of Feb is Haaaaa!!!!!!! supposed to be completion date. Maybe March.

I expected the west end to be open by now based on what I saw on my last visited, but still uncompleted.

A visit to Brampton Station Feb 01-10

It is really kinda shocking how long this project has taken....at least work has not totally stopped (although on some days it appears that way).

Something is going on starting friday.

Brampton Transit web page said:
52 McMurchy Effective Friday, February 5, from 7:00 am – 5:30 pm, Route 52 McMurchy will be on a temporary detour due to improvements being made to the new platforms at the Brampton GO Station. Railroad Street will be closed to eastbound and westbound traffic from Mill Street to George Street.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but I took the Barrie GO this morning from Newmarket and noticed that the passing track north of Maple Station is now complete.

Excellent news. Speed restrictions won't be off it for a while, so two-way is still a few months off, but now its looking pretty certain that insofar as off-peak train service is concerned we can count on having a completely transformed GO network by the fall.

On that note, I think we're probably due to hear about a new schedule board shortly. Perhaps we should all clap our hands and hope vegeta has some good news for us?
