GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Yesterday morning (March 23) Brampton felt like a "real" train station.

The VIA train that is scheduled to depart Brampton at 7:44 each morning was running a few minutes late and got to the station just before the GO Train that is scheduled to depart at 7:59.

In the old days (ie a few weeks ago)...the GO would have sat idling west of the station while the VIA loaded/unloaded and would only be able to enter the station once it departed. Now, the VIA entered the station on the north platform and took on its passengers....at the same time the GO entered on the south platform and did the same.

A late VIA train, then, had no impact on the timely operation of the GO train......that felt good!

Great news! How are passengers doing getting over to the South platform? Must be a big change for them! Will VIA ever use the South platform?

GO is studying the creation of platform 28-29 at Union Station. After that I think it is safe to say that only using the long platforms for two trains remains as an easy way to increase usable GO platform space.

How can there be a 28-29 when the maximum track space is used and the telus building borders the south end?

After 27, there are two bypass tracks, Are they going to remove a track in order to add a platform?

Sounds like it ... how often are the bypass tracks used?

There's probably details in the bid package - http://www.metrolinx.com/pcs_public/en/CurrentTenders/TenderAds/RQQ-2010-USR-102.aspx

CN runs a westbound train daily around noon on the bypass track.

From time to time, you will see trains in both directions when the Halton sub gets over loaded or the train is bypassing Toronto in the first place.

It safe to say, adding an extra platform will have very little impact on CN trains.

A second set of new construction notices went up at Brampton....in addition to the Presto infrastructure install there will now be additional work to extend the south (old) platform and to install snow melting equipment to allow for the introduction of 12 car trains. This work is, apparently, to last until summer.

Isn't the old platform the North platform? Also, was the south platform built for 10 cars or 12?

The south was built for 12 cars from day one as well for snow melting.

It is the north side that has to be rebuilt for snow melting and extension.

The extension will happen at the west end as there next to no room at the east end.

Any work at the east end will require the stairs from Main St to be close, but you still can use the centre entrance/exit to get to the platforms.

yep...sorry for that north/south confusion!

it is the old (north) platform that is to be worked on and the signs are all at the west end of the track.

Need pictures of the finished product.

And you shall recieve. Here's some pics at platform level. A new elevator connects the older north platform (still used by all VIA trains) with the south platform and the bus terminal. The station was always accessible, but with a very roundabout route required to transfer between GO trains and parking and the GO and BT buses.

If these people don't like what going on, ""MOVE"" as they knew they where going to live beside the busy rail corridor in Canada when they bought here.

Another case of people not doing their homework or understanding what take place on rail corridors when they bought their place as well trying to change things their way.

So a few hundred people can sleep at night, you will force 10's of thousand people been late for work or traveling longer daily to have this work done during the day.

+1

It's like people who move near airports and complain about the noise. Pearson is effectively closed for 1/4 of the day because of this.

I live by Pearson and never even notice the planes anymore.

I have been training it in more frequently lately....today was the first time I saw the VIA train use the new South platform.....seemed to go without a hitch.
